How do you deal with your gear in crowds..?
Discussion
Decided to wander around town taking photos this afternoon, just trying to pick some atmosphere. Got some ok shots, but it occurred to me i sometimes didn't feel very confident with the D80 around my neck in crowds. Girlfriend just got her bag stolen from the car when we were not more than 25m from it (and this was in Perth, WA so hardly the crime capitol of the World!?), so maybe i feel a bit edgy because of that recent memory..?
Opportunities exist for a photo in the most unlikely of spots. I always feel if i keep the camera in my (non-descript) rucksack i don't take advantage of these chances for a great (luck) shot. With it on your person you are always more vulnerable to "attention".
I guess to an extent one has to get it insured and then take a devil may care attitude to it if it does get nicked - afterall things can be replaced, but anyone any tips for "blending in" a bit better, with a (relatively) expensive camera on your person...?
Cheers ~PHIL

Wrap the neck strap around your wrist instead - gives much closer control, and you're always ready for the shot too
I learnt this in amsterdam- had a junkie nearly try and grab my camera off me when it was around my neck. Having it wrapped around your hand makes it much harder to pinch, and much easier for taking pics.
I wander around with my D200 with battery grip, SB800 and a £300 Sigma lens on it - all told, about £2k. I just make sure the strap is across my chest diagonally, so it's around my neck rather than just on my shoulder - i'm also constantly on the lookout for anyone suspicious!! As mentioned though, wrapping the strap around your wrist is another good idea, and also means you can easily swing it at anyone who attempts to steal it too - not sure how heavy a D80 is but I reckon a D200 could make a nice dent in someone's head! LOL. Unless the robber had a lethal weapon, they'd not get my camera without a fight, that's for sure.
