Just got back from York ... lovely city (no scameras to be seen). However I did find something a little confusing. On one of the roads into York painted on the road was a 40 limit along with those bloody annoying raised red tarmac ridges. However, next to it on a lamppost was a NSL sign. Now my question is what is the limit on that road?

I wouldn't like to say what the limit is, but if there are NSL signs They'd be hard pushed to prosecute you.
Paint on the road is rarely mandatory.
40 may just be advisory like SLOW or KEEP CLEAR

I suspect the road markings are the first stage of implementing a lower speed limit in the near future.

Our local council has done exactly this but hasn't changed the signs as they run out of money

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the NSL is variable depending on the road. Most people know that it's 60 on a single carriageway, 70 on a dual carriagewy or M-way. But I seem to remember it also drops to 40 on a single carriageway in certain conditions, which I think relate to the spacing of streetlights?

I think it's in the Highway Code somewhere

Correct ME if I'm wrong, but you're wrong.
If a single carriageway has a NSL sign then it's 60, end of.
Any other limit has to be signposted other than a 30. if you're on a road with street lights (used to also have something to do with spacing , but not any more) then the limit is 30. Something that most of the halfwits I deal with seem to have forgotten.

Judge it from a built down area. The only way is up...

You're quite right, I've just had a look at the Highway code on the net, and there's bugger all about an implied 40 limit...Arse!

Still not 100%. The 30 also has to be signed - but only at the start and end, it just does not require repeater signs.

Yes but if you came out of your drive, and you lived in a 30 road, you wouldn't have signs on your driveway, so you'd have to guess the limit from the absence of signs and the prescence of streetlamps.

Erm, not quite with you here old fruit. In this situation I would have:-

A. had to drive onto my driveway at somepoint (unless I had made the car myself at home) so would know what the speed limit is on that road from that previous journey.

and

B. Knowing the highway I code I would do 30mph until I saw a sign (change of limit OR repeater) that told me otherwise.

However, this doesn't alter the fact that a 30mph has to be signed at the start of that limit. Or that it is the only limit that does not require repeater signs.

I was just pointing out a slight error of fact (that a 30mph does not need to be signed) and yes I was being slightly pedantic .

Not quite, you would not necessarily have had to build the car at home, it could have been delivered by someone else, speed limits have been known to be changed overnight, so it's concievable that you wouldn't know.
What about the poor pikey who wakes up in a different place every morning.
I've cracked it... no wonder they appear to break the law all the time... they're not criminals, they just don't know hat's wrong and right..............
off to write a thesis.

But if the speed limit were to change on my road wouldn't the council need to notify me?
