Advice buying RX7 please
Discussion
Hi there, I live in the Croydon area and am interested in buying an RX7. Could you reccomend anybody reasonably local who is a specialist in these cars, or any other dealers who sell them. Anything I should be wary of? I have a budget around £5K. Want a standard (ish) car, no mega horsepower jobs as I will use it every day as my main car. Thanks.
Hi
If you want a daily drive then an RX7 probably isn't the best thing to look at. I have one that gets used daily and love it to bits although I only do about 20 miles a day. At the moment it does a maximum of about 17 mpg and they run 280 bhp as standard. I'm probably going to be doing a bit more mileage in it soon so am in the process of selling as I can't justify using it for regular drives of 100 odd miles at a time.
With regards to your budget you aren't likely to get a good one for under £5k. Looking at what is about at the moment, for that sort of money you will probably be looking at getting one that either needs an engine rebuild now or will need one within the next 10k/20k miles. The minimum you can expect to spend on a rebuild is £2,500 depending on how bad it is. Cars that have had a recent rebuild seem to start from about £5,500 or £6,000 up to about £20,000 if it has a lot of mods. If you're serious about buying though then it is probably worth visiting some of the owners forums for advice on the main things to look out for when buying. I'm a member of www.mazdarotaryclub.com and the people over there should be able to answer most questions. Unfortunately I only know the specialists around here but somebody on the forum should be able to tell you of anyone in your area.

As above - do go and look at the http://www.mazdarotaryclub.com and find the FAQ section and buying guides, there are loads of them on the net and even though there's lots to take in - a few hours reading may save you alot of money in the long run.
Make sure you factor in money for running costs (they do use some oil) and drink fuel and oil needs changing every 3000 miles.
If you look after the car it will look after you and give you a rewarding drive.
Just ignore all the urban myths though.
