So far my driving has only involved the dreaded commute into work but even so I was shocked to find consumption had worked out at under 14mpg.

Is this (ab)normal?

Takes me back to my Range Rover owning days.

Will pull out my manual if you want, cause noticed in it, the most fuel efficient speeds and gears you should be in to get low fuel consumption. Depends how you drive it I guess... If you drive it like you stole it, pretty bad fuel consumption, but if you drive it like a grandma you get excellent fuel consumption.

Even driving like Grandma I'm getting crappy fuel consumption around town, but if it's any consolation the Audi boys are having a similar discussion and they've only got piddly little 4.2s:

http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

I'm getting an easy 300miles per tank out on the open road, which is about 75% of what I got from a 2.5 Tdi AllRoad, so I'm not too unhappy.

I've owned my Monaro for over 2 years and have never had better than 14.something. Normally hovers around 13.5mpg. Town driving mostly.

Looked at the instant consumption on long journeys to help economy, but NEVER worked out the average MPG.... IMHO it somehow takes the fun out of driving the beast.

I have a 30 mile crawl to work (trip computer says 30mph avg) and I get about 17mpg. I've noticed fuel consumption is related to throttle opening/duration and gear choice. Instead of putting your foot down in a higher gear, try using a lower gear with higher revs. When you need to accelerate you can do so more easily because the car is in the right gear; I now drive all the way to work in 4th gear @ 2200rpm.

I would also add I ride a motorbike to work most days which cuts my journey time in half and does 36mpg.

I've had my 04 VXR since saturday, and it's averaged at just over 20mpg. This is with driving through town, fast A roads and some motorway cruising. Best instant consumption I've seen is 30mpg, idling along at 70 in 6th, worst somewhere south of 5mpg when flooring it TBH I'm not expecting it to be great on fuel, and it wasn't high on my priority list when considering buying it!

28 average when pounding up and down the motorways at 85 ish (on a track of course).

Can get it down to sub 10 when having fun, but then tyres cost as much as fuel with that sort of use

The great thing about the car is its flexability and the fact is does two jobs in one i.e week day work horse and weekend fun car.

I guess you shouldent buy a car with a V8 6.0 litre engine and not expect to use a bit of gas?

Mine was much better after a car back from Wortec and a re-map. Also from Monkfish, the poly bushes and front end set up pac helps make the car feel much better and as the front tyres last a lot longer, must equal less drag and therefore more miles to the gallon?

Have fun and just keep filling it up!

So this is essentially keeping the engine at tick-over speed then! Probably fine for theoretical maximums at constant speed, but I've found in the real world that doing ~70 is better in 5th if you're adjusting speed alot, as if in 6th when put your foot down, the fuel economy takes a dive, but not much else happens!

If you watch your instantaneous fuel consumption, travelling in a higher gear isn't neccessarily the best. Anyhow, these figures are out of the manual, if you want the best fuel economy.
