Are the corners of the rear panel just below the boot lid and adjacent to the lamp cluster a common area, or does this indicate a possible knock at the rear?

Mine has this - the previous owner suggested it was something heavy in the boot, 'shooting backwards' as the car accelerated hard. Dunno whether it's true but sounds plausible.

I think pushing/pulling the car by the rear edge of the boot with the boot lid up can cause this. If you push or pull your car in/out of the garage, use the pillar or chassis under the bonnet.
