Watched it on 5th Gear last night.

Expectedly Leon thrashed Tiff in the cone slalom, but I was more surprised at the brake test where the bike only lost out by about 6-7 metres from 90-odd mph, which is remarkable.
As for the circuit, Tiff's reaction was magic when Leon popped the wheelie going through the chicane in front of him to rub it in.....biggrin
Mind you Tiff is a biker anyway, unlike that anti-bike knob Clarkson.

It was the boggo 1098 as well, no trickness.

For those who can't view youtube at work, they did a head to head of the Lambo Gallardo Superleggera (extra 20bhp and 100kg lighter than stabdard) against a standard 1098... Tiff v Leon Haslam.

They did a slalom test, brake test and 2 laps of Combe.

Slalom test bike won, brake test car won (not by much though) and in the 2 laps Tiff got the drop from a rolling start and led for the first lap, but Leon had him on the start/finish straight and stayed ahead for the rest of the lap.

But the new super lightweight of the Gallardo was negated in that test because Haslam was in the car with Tiff making up the shortfall, don't think it would have made up the 3secs but I wonder if Tiff should have been on the back of Haslam's bike for parity? wink

Tiff only led on the first lap because he cheated hehe

wonder if they will ever decide to get a proper bike round there against the 4 wheel brigade,

if i remember rightly they only use dukes cos they sponsored by airwaves and airwaves were sponsors of fith gear.

get an o7 gsxr, blade, r1 etc etc and watch mr needells face sink.......rofl

I think they pitched a GSX-R1000 against a Westfield XTR4 once.

Err....if not a Ducati, you must mean a MV Agusta then, can't think of any other proper bike's........wink
'cos I'm sure you can't be refering to any of those cheap, nasty, two-a-penny Japanese makes...........laugh

dont get me wrong, the 1098 is a bloody nice bike but no twin can live with a 4....

maybe consider a desmosedici rr but apart from that what is there that actually is up on the pace of the modern uber superbike??

answer, none, it really made me laugh when tiff quoted the duke at 180 mph,

maybe downhill (a steep one) wind (hurricane) assisted

give me tried and tested jap engineering anyday, at least i can go out in the rain wthout fear of my electrics going wrong.........

Not really interested in Top Trumps, but why do you scoff at what Stiff Needle says, do you have personal experience.....?

Stiff was generalising after all as do most journo's.

But, I've seen the bike mag tests of 1098's and they have got anything between 172-176 out of them, and I've also seen print-outs of data-loggers from 1098 owners on Duc forums posting as high as 184.

So a glib '180' quote doesn't warrant to me the downhill/wind behind etc comments, but then I wouldn't care if it 'only' did 150 or whatever anyway, as I'd still have one over any Jap bike.

erm yes, lots of personal experience.

true datalogged speed of a 1098s at brunters on 4 different runs was 169, 170,
170, 167, i really dont do the forum bragging thing, why quote your toy does this and that when everyone knows your bullshitting.

and when i rode a 1098 myself it really didnt feel as quick as a k7 gsxr 750

on a empty track where corners are empty a 1098 may slightlty be quicker than a modern jap 4 but when there is traffic and other bikes the duke loses out,

on any modern jap 4 you can ride at 7/10ths and still be going at silly pace

to go the same pace on a duke you need to be at 10/10ths all the time

like i said nice bikes, but not for me....

each to there own though

I thought it strange they did not do a 1/4 mile run, and why didn't they do separate runs on the track (and use computer trickery to superimpose one onto the other), both were fast in different situations but you can't really expect a car to overtake when the bike is taking the racing line.

Looks like the original link has been removed, her's a new one:

Yes, no idea why they don’t it that way, clearly the bike was holding the car up in a few places, but i would guess they didn’t do it that way because the margin would look even better in favour of the bike.

The Ducati was probably about as fast as any road going bike round there, maybe Silverstone would suit an Jap bike better.

Like any 1000cc twin the 1098 feels slow but the reality is that its moving way faster then you think because of the short shifting.

No way would i pay the extra for a new 1098 mind, its just not worth the extra cash over the jap 4.

I love twins, and would easily go back to them again, a litre jap 4 is way too much for the road anyway. Always loved the Aprilia RSVR.

I had a bit of a run with my mate in his Galardo at the weekend , it has been breathed on a bit and was certainly quicker than i was expecting .

He took off suddenly a couple of times and its only due to the Busas grunt that i wasnt left trailing .

Whilst it was exceptionally quick , I am sure the bike could ride past him on the straights at will, but it was fun to see a hyper car being driven quickly for once

I'm afraid its "just" a supercar.

Hypercar is Veyron/Pagain/GT/Enzo etc.... smile
