PR534: How fast Harriet?
news: for immediate release
In a very unusual move, CPS dropped a speeding charge today against Harriet
Harman, after she had pled guilty by letter.
Safe Speed assumes that this move was intended to keep the details of Ms
Harman's offence from press and public.
Paul Smith, founder of SafeSpeed.org.uk, said: "We demand to know the details
of Harriet Harman's speeding offence. Just how fast was she going? If a fixed
penalty was appropriate why wasn't she given one in the first place?"
"It seems highly unlikely that an ordinary member of the public would have been
treated in the same way. Are senior politicians now above the law? Is spin now
more important than justice? This is absolutely shocking. We need the full
details and we need them now."

Harman pleads guilty to speeding
Deputy Labour leader Harriet Harman has pleaded guilty to committing a speeding offence in Suffolk.
Harman, leader of the house of commons, was due to appear before Ipswich magistrates, but avoided attending court by pleading guilty by post.
The CPS withdrew the summons, after the 57-year-old admitted exceeding a temporary speed limit on 7 April.
After the case, a Labour Party spokesman said "Harriet pleaded guilty by post" but would say no more.
It is the second time the former Solicitor-General has been caught speeding, following an incident in February 2003 when she was caught doing 99mph in a 70mph zone on the M4 in Wiltshire.

Aren't these two sentences contradictary? Did she get fined or not?Harman incurred a £60 fine and three penalty points under a fixed penalty notice, a police spokeswoman said.
I've put this bit in bold...

None of it seems to make sense...if she was supposed to go to court then that means she either put a "not guilty" in or her speed was a lot in excess of the limit or she was up to 9 points and facing a ban,yet she only got £60 and 3 points?report said:

It's not me that needs the glasses. Why was the COURT CASE withdrawn (to be replaced with a fixed penalty) AFTER she pled guilty in writing?report said:

I don't trust the media about global warming, I don't trust them on anything else either.

If a ban was on the cards (for the first one) how could she plead guilty by post? I thought you had to be present at court to recieve a ban?Very hard to comment on what happened here without the full facts being known.

Why has it been kept secret the road she was caught speeding on?
My guess it was the A14 or A11.
I guess she was doing over 100 which ever road it was on.
"The CPS withdrew the summons, after the 57-year-old admitted exceeding a temporary speed limit on 7 April."
Would that work for you or me? I think not!

Would an FOI request get this info?
No, Criminal Proceedings are excluded.BUT I would have hoped that the BBC or ITV would be interested and kicking up a stink... Well, ok, ITV, can't expect the BBC to do anything Anti-Labour Party but the catch-22 is it ALSO involves speeding, their second favorite thing..

Oh, that's quite nice...you can just imagine the arguments going on in Shepherd's Bush:-- "It's a speeding case!"
- "But it's a Labour politician"
- "Speeding"
- "Labour"
...ad nauseam...

It's just a shame the BBC aren't really the robotic drones they appear to be, as such a logical dilemma may be enough to blow a few circuits...
