Bit of a boring question, but I'm after a compact camera and I have no idea what's good and what's not. I like the idea of the Ricoh GX100 as I'd like the wide angle lense but I was looking to spend 1-200 quid (rather than 400eek) as I have a D70 for more fancy stuff.

Aside from the wide angle aspect, my main worry is the speed of operation as most compacts I've used have been very slow, so the moment is gone by the time the shutter actually falls.

Any one got any recommendations?

(And sorry, I know it's dull but a search didn't throw up anything recent.)

Pretty impressed with the Ixus 70 I got my girlfriend, shutter speed is pretty good and the camera is diddy enough that you really can take it everywhere with you.

Just found out that Ricoh do a lesser range of cameras with a wide angle lense and quick response. Looking at the Caplio R6. Anyone have any views?

Anyone... anyone... Bueler...?

My dad has an Ixus 75 and it's really really good. Nice and quick, great screen and good photos.

Cheers guys, had a look at the Ixus and as you say very quick, but only 35mm equivalent lense.

So I had a play with the R6 and bought one. Jessops price match 157.00. Which was nice.

It's small and black, with a good feel to it and it's very, very fast on start up and to react to quick use, whereas the Ixus needs to be focussed in advance to get the quick shutter. The TZ3 which is the only other I could find with wideangle lense was slow even with a half shutter press.

We'll see how the pics turn out, hopefully I've got a bit more time now to play wih it...
