It could be any number of things. The ABS has loads of sensors and things and it will turn itself off if it does not like what information it is getting. For example, mine had a fault breaklight switch which is connected to the break pedal. The ABS was seeing that the break pedal was on all the time so it turned the ABS off and lit the dash light.
A flashing light means a problem but the ABS is still working, a steady light means the ABS has been disabled.
My advise is to take it to a Lotus dealer ASAP. They have a tool called a Tech-1 scanner which they plug into the ABS unit and it gives them a readout of the faults codes.
I'd have a look at www.lotusespritworld.com if I were you and look up links in the other stuff section. You can join the UK Esprit Yahoo group which has about 400 members.

Karl - I don't know the answer to your problem, but i can give you some advice: don't drive the car until you have had a dealer or specialist look at it. A flashing light is not a good sign. A dealers tech1 scanner will tell them what the problem is with the abs.
Where did you buy the car? If its from a dealer i'd be wanting them to rectify this at their cost.
Regarding how much your wheels are worth, it depends very much on the condition. The 17" GT3/s4 wheels are popular however as upgrades for the ealier cars. Somewhere in the range 400-600 or so? Ebay maybe??
cheers
