1996 Disco 300TDI Manual - 2nd Gear Crunch?
Discussion
Hello there,
My mother bought a 1996 (N) Discovery today, privately, and on the way home she noticed that when changing from 1st gear to 2nd gear there is a crunch and it snatches into gear. Going from 3rd to 2nd does not do this.
I presume this is a problem with the syncro between 1st and 2nd, but have no real idea about Landy's, so thought you guys could advise.
Is this going to be terminal, or is it just an annoying feature that we should get used to?
On another note, is there any good independant landrover specialists who could take care of the servicing of said car, around the hampshire area? my mother is based near Basingstoke/Reading, RG26.
Many thanks,
Alex.

1st to 2nd can be a problem if you do a quick change as you would in a normal car. If you hesitate very briefly between the two when the gear stick is in neutral it should be smooth.I presume this is a problem with the syncro between 1st and 2nd, but have no real idea about Landy's, so thought you guys could advise.
If the previous owners have done the same as your mum is then it can lead to wear...
I have a TD200 which I think has the same box. It does the same plus when it is hot it sometimes wont go into second at all. It is the sychro hubs going or gone, I just double de-clutch and it doesn't crunch. Mines been like it for a good few months and is steadily getting worse. I've had a reasonable quote from a freind who runs a gearbx and clutch repair company but I'm waiting till the clutch or box die before I get it done.
I assume she didn't notice this when she test drove it.

Sadly this is a common fault with them. BTW the 200 Tdi has the LT77 gearbox and the 300 Tdi R380. I use Ashcroft in Luton and found them to be very good www.ashcroft-transmissions.co.uk

How much was the quote, and do you have their contact details? I'd like to pass on the details as an option for her.
I did say he is a friend so you may not get the same quote as me. I think it was £150 plus the price of the clutch plus £75 to do the gearbox while it is out, but I could be mistaken as I don't know if the £75 includes parts or not but either way I thought it was a reasonable price as it is not an easy job and the gearbox & transmission is too heavy for me to remove myself. He is in Brockley South London if you are interested.
If it only crunches from first to second then thats GOOD-ive had some that crunch in every gear! They all do it eventually.I took a 200tdi in px for another car I was selling a few months ago with a crunching box so I sourced a good secondhand one off ebay for £120 and had a local mechanic fit it for £150.Swapping gearboxes over on discoverys is not an easy job,its fiddly and the gearbox unit itself is very heavy.

i can vouch for that having changed an auto box on a V8 three times. i know its not a LR but my transit also crunches from 1st to 2nd but not 3rd to 2nd and it is much worse than cold. it isn't a problem for now, just be slow and gentle with the gear changes and it should last for a while whilst you save up the money for a reccon box and fitting.it's a common fault...if it's a Tdi there's little point in revving past 3000rpm in first which should help. There's a bit of a knack to a smooth change, I find that going 1st-neutral-a teeny bit into 2nd-back to neutral-into 2nd properly but all in a blink of an eye will give you a smooth change every time.
Mine's done 165000 and is still going strong...
