Hello chaps,

I thought I best ask the experts. I have a hobby Business where I sell English Wheeling machines, and have taken in in part exchange an old racing motorcycle for one of my large machines. I am trying to judge its value, to see if I have done the right thing.

Its a Yamaha XT-XS 500 that looks fairly complete. It comes with two boxes of spares and was last ran about 2 years ago. It has on its fairing a scrutineer from Oulton Park 1989 which I presume when it was last raced. The chap from whome I collected it, said it came from Ireland many years ago.

Anyhow whats its value?

Nothing else is known. I was cleaning the wheels and a man on a bike stopped and was looking at it and said it was a modified frame. So not the foggiest!

I think the engines been mucked about with, it has huge compression. To what it owes me is difficuct too. I sold a prototype machine that I found a huge learning curve. Complicated I know.

without the decompresser fitted even std engines are a bastard to spin over .to make any sort of race bike it would have to have been tuned .the engine number could be VERY important here it should be on the left hand side of the engine under the carb .

Back in a tick.

...Right back. 000460 if thats the right number.

This was looking at the front of the motorcycle and it was on a flat plate that was very oily. I had to spray WD40 on it then wire wool the area to get the picture. Hope this is the right bit.

hmmm thats not the correct format for an xt or sr engine they should start with a * then a number followed by a letter then another number eg 1u6 then a series of numbers with a * at the end .sorry i misled you over number position as you now know its on the right hand side .doh! .

i can't find the engine number range for the tt500 which is the pukka enduro model (very rare in the uk).the number you found looks to be in the correct place but doesn't look right to me .

The case is cut vertical to show the small sprocket, under there its all lockwired, as is the rest of the bike. Stepahnie and I were looking around where you said but cant find numbers of any sort. I have taken more pictures so will upload in the morning if its any good.

lol i take it the skinny tyre side is the front ? as you sit on the bike the engine number is on the right (the hand you hold your knife in )just kidding .just back from the barrel , i think that was the photo you posted earlier the serrated lines look correct .the number however doesn't, maybe it has had new crankcases and some random numbers stamped on ?

The original owner has been in touch and is sending me full details. He wants to buy it back also.
