E46 Driveshaft Noise
Discussion
I had the E46 on the ramp the other day to check the rear shocks. Undid the lower bolt of the N/S rear shock without supporting the wheel, so it dropped. No big deal I thought except that once I did it all up again and drove away there was a knocking sound on that corner when going over potholes or cornering.
Had the car back on the ramp today to determine where the knocking is coming from. The only thing I could find was a lot of play in the N/S driveshaft (in and out). Did a bolt check on everything else and nothing loose so I presumed knocking must be a CV joint on the way out?
Funny thing is though that once I got the car off the ramp this time, there's no knocking sound when I'm driving anymore.
In any case, I suppose the driveshafts/CV joints are getting on a bit and will need replacing. What are the options and where would you go to get these parts? Is it a rebuild job, good secondhand parts or should I buy them new?
