How can I check the MOT and insurance status of a car?
Discussion
F##kwit sister in law and idiot boyfriend were living with us.
They got given use of a car by relatives oop North.
They then buggered off to Spain leaving the car on our drive and no-one seems interested in taking the bloody thing away.
It has tax until the end of November.
It has no documents with it but we are assured it's got a valid MOT and is insured but frankly I trust these people as far as I can throw them.
I can't sell the bloody thing as it has no V5 or service history but if they turn up I'm going to flog it to the lowest bidder but I need to check the status of the MOT and insurance before I drive it anywhere.
Short of driving around until I find a trafic car with ANPR fitted and seeing if I get a tug, what's the easiest way of checking whether it's legal to drive?
Cheers
Dave

You cannot check.
Insurance data base not open to Joe Public.
MOT database you will need V5 to go on line with VRM.
Your going to flog it?.
Not yours - You say it belongs to relatives 'op North'
Flog it and that could be THEFT.
Chase up relatives. Request details from DVLA if they are unknown to you and chase them.

Dead easy to check status of vehicles through the dvla.
just click on the link, fill in reg and make and then click next.
http://www.vehiclelicence.gov.uk/EvlPortalApp/appl...
Not illegal and totally free!

Edit to add- Can't believe I have just contradicted dvd! Should I be worried? If so

Thanks Johnych,
Unfortunately that search facility only gives deets of tax which I already know as the sodding thing is sitting about 20 feet away, the tax expires at the end of November.
DVD
Just spoken to the mother of the big footed sloth of a boyfriend and it turns out that "Oh yes its definately insured" but that could just be F&T and without seeing the paperwork I'm not prepared to drive the thing on the road.
She also said that she gave the V5 to my idiot sis-in-law so she could register it in her name, but no-one has a bleeding clue where any paperwork is to back this up.
She said she was quite happy for me to sell it on her behalf, but would a dealer actually buy a car from me without my name on the V5?
As it stands there's a cr4pheap on my driveway that no-one wants but that I can't even move, let alone sell.
I should just push the sodding thing into the road and let l'authorities take care of it!

you should (or registered owner) be able to apply for a duplicate v5 registration document for the vehicle
Registered owner is in Spain....although now you mention it I'm sure she wrote and signed such a letter before she went, and just forgot to post it. OP could do that for her...
