Spade terminal on alternator?
Discussion
Good evening chaps/chapesses',Finally got the beast running again today after nearly a year out of comission, i have one wire left over which is white and slate trailer which according to the bible is coil to tacho (i think iirc) i also have a spade terminal on the back of the alternator which is empty, does anyone know what this terminal is for and what colour cable goes to it please? cheersP.S my lights are pulsing as well (all of them) are these things related?
You should have three wires to the alternator. Main power out (the obvious one).
Battery Voltage reference in.
Switched ignition feed to energize the field coils.
If you have all of them then that's all you need. Of course you do need to check that they're connected to the right terminals!

I thought you had a pre-serp? If so the main cables are ring terminals fastened on a post. there is a small spade which is the field coil exciter (& warning light) which goes in the centre - there is nornmally also a spade for suppressor near the outside IIRC.
Does the alt warning light come on when you switch on the ignition - if not it is prob the connection you are missing. If the light come on & goes off when the engine is running your alt is prob wired OK (the field / warning light is NY - brown with yellow stripe IIRC). If you don't have that wire connected the alt will not be charging either.

Good Morning Spend, no it's a serp motor i've got, i know where two of the wires go on the alternator(they can't go anywhere else) but it's the spade terminal i have'nt got anything attached to and wondered what colour cable i should be looking for and what does it do. I will check about the warning light tomorrow/today now but as far as i can see i don't have a brown/ yellow wire going spare?Does the alt warning light come on when you switch on the ignition - if not it is prob the connection you are missing. Hi GreenV8S, i've connected two of the wires, they can only go on in their correct locations, what colour do you have for the Switched ignition feed wire please ( i'm assuming the thinner spade terminal is the S/I/F wire)Does this explain why my lights are pulsing? Take a pic of the back of your alt, that brown/yellow cable is the ignition feed to start the field, cant recall seeing one that was not a female spade though??
Dave
Hi Spend, i will get a photo done tonight and send it to your personal email if you don't mind as i don't know how to post a pic on here, cheersDave

B Dave
y hell Spend that was quick, even for you, am i correct that you need your own website to host the images before you can put them on a forum?to host images when I posted them on the forum before.
Have a look in formatting help (when you compose a post) on how to use the link they give you.
