What are you using it for mainly?
106 Rallye's aren't as quick as the other two, Mi's are good and cheap to build & modify if you can do the work yourself and join 205gtidrivers but they do have issues with oil starvation if your planning on alot of track days, obviously alot can be done to help this though. The 172 is the newest and most powerful straight out of the box, but also the heaviest and most expensive.
As a daily driver with a few TD's a year i'd go for the Clio, for a predominantly track based car, i'd have the Mi purely because it's cheaper to build, run and repair.

ok 205's can be fragile too, but atleast you know spares are readily available and relatively cheap.

saying that all my 205s have been fragile but reliable

Thats because you're supposed to change them every 5 years

If you are after B road and unclassified road fun a sorted S2 106 rallye is enormous fun, and the handling is such a joy. Okay I'm biased I'm into my 10 year of ownership. My 106 is currently undergoing a refettle, but they are not expensive to run, on my 3rd set of tyres in 76k and there is nothing really to go wrong on the electrics side, always a worry with the French.
Don't under estimate a 106 rallye. The 1.3 isn't as fast as the others and won't win many traffic light grand prix but its an excellent drivers car.
However, alot of the original 1.3 engines have gone pop and been replaced with 16v engines from 106GTIs and Saxo VTS's (like mine and CPC's, who posted earlier) which makes the car an entirely different beast. Mine does 0-100 in under 16 seconds with just breathing mods so is easily in the same league as a 172 and MI16.

well i love the 205's i used to have one and craved another after i sold it... i like the 106 rallyes too but and would go for the 16v conversion but am worried it maybe a little too small...the 172 is also a fave of mine being that newer and also like the look of the car alot!!.. so thats why im stuck..like i said i would go wwith the type r but not really wanting to spend 4.5k upwards...rather £3k downwards... it will mainly be used on b roads and for going to work and then social really..
106 is near as makes no difference the same size as a 205 inside. I went from 205 to 106 and didn't feel it lacked space at all. It's the shorter bonnet that makes it look small. The clio is slightly wider and taller but in real world terms doesn't offer much more room.
