I have a mid engined rwd car and the exhaust twists and turns goes throught a few 90 deg bends before letting gasses escape.

I want to get rid of most of the bends and have a short exhaust probabally about 150 cm long.

I know I will obviously louder which is not an issue as I t used as a drag car and I think less back pressure will be good for the turbo, but is there any down sides?

Not really- A turbo likes the shortest biggest exhaust it can have, as the gas is under a fair bit of pressure at big rpm and needs to escape as easily as possible. Doubt it'll make any difference to your ET's if you've alrady got a straight through system, though.

it'll be bit of a flame thrower if the car is over fuelling though, a friend ran a side exit effort on a carb'd turbo lump and that used to flame on each gear change and the over run. Highly spectacular at night

My system on the car has got quite a large rear silencer, so I think an unsilenced car with a short exhaust will produce a bit more power and be lighter also.

I like the idea of flames !

alright mate. hows the car going??? have you fitted meth injection/forged bottom end yet??

i think its a great idea and you should take a saw to the pipes right now! lol. really though, the less presure after the turbo the better. alot of the US V8 guys run VERY short pipes after the turbos. makes them abit louder and you WILL hear the turbo more but as its a drag car you wont mind that!smile

also you can exspect faster spool to!

Cheers

Chris.

Got the methanol injection fitted just getting prices fored the internals and it will be getting done over the winter after the 14th october as I am racing at York. I have had a Peloquin diff fitted and a twin plate clutch. Also I have purchased some lighter wheels and some B F Goodrich drag radials so should be in the 11s !

When I get home on Monday going to sort the exhaust but one thing the worries me is will it produce more boost as a result of having less back pressure ?

possibly, but not if the old exhaust wasn't restrictive to the point of slowing the compressor down.

Only one way to find out........................
