Hi guys

A friend passed a traffic car sitting at the side of a dual carriageway side on (up one of those little hill things) at approx 0.8 leptons. It was pitch black when he went past.

He was wondering ; )

- Would the traffic car have needed to follow him to get a ticket (which it didn't); and

- If the traffic car didn't need to follow him, would the equipment in the traffic car be able to take a pic the pitch black and then a NIP will be issued?

He thanks you in advance.

At an indicated 80mph it is unlikely that a traffic car would be all that interested anyway (cue queue of people who've been pulled at that speed....)

AFAIK the usual handheld gubbins doesn't work at night, although there are other means of measuring speed (VASCAR?) - but then ID'ing the car would be difficult.

Tell your friend not to worry. ;0)

Laser does work at night but I am sure they would not have been interested and if they were then they would have stopped the car.

Back in the late 1990s when I had my Golf VR6 (I loved that car at the time - such a shame they are all worth about £3.47 now and consequnelty are used and abused in the hands of spotty yoofs these days) I noticed a car doing the same speed as me down the motorway one dark night about 3 miles later it turned out it was a marked police car. DOH.

A similar thing happened to me.

I noticed a set of xenon headlights following me for about 15 miles on a dual carriageway, always changing lane when I was.

However, I was tired and the cruise was set at an indicated 79mph.

Eventually a marked BMW 5 series overtook me - lucky I was tired!
