Sometimes even Audi/VW don't know.

I would say 60,000 miles.

I don't understand why they vary so much - we have an A4 TDi that needs it every 60-80K depending on who you believe, and an A4 2.0 petrol where the interval is 115K.

can be 60k or 80k depends on engine code audi/vw changed updated the intervals of when the belt is changed after the cars were built on certain engines, but is always best to change sooner rather than later thats why they can't always tell you over the phone, some cars had a new section added to the service folder to remind owners of the new changes, and the dealers were updated with a list of the engines that have been updated to these changes.
I would also recomend all the tensioners and water pump to be changed to as these are extra items and are normally over looked unless faulty, these items are driven by the belt and is costly when they fail.
