Change of tax codes....
Discussion
Hi All,
It's pay day today! (Woohoo!) and i've just got my payslip however my tax code has changed from the standard (522L I think) to 484L1 and I wondered why and what it means?
A quick look on a few websites doesn't shed any light on it so I wondered if someone on here could help?
The only thing I can think that might have caused the change is taking private medical insurance at work? (Which I took in January!)
Cheers,
Phill

You should have received in the post a Detailed Notice of Coding from the Revenue explaining why the Coding has been adjusted downwards.
There are a number of reasons why this may have happened:
You are receiving a taxable Benefit in Kind from your employer for the tax year 2007/08. The employer would have notified the Revenue about this on or before 6 July 2007 on a P11d (which would have revealed the value of the BIK you received in 2006/07). Therefore, the amount adjusted on the coding will probably be out of date as there is a good chance that the same benefit will be slightly higher for 2007/08.
You owe some arrears of tax from a previous tax year which the Revenue have decided to collect in 2007/08 by extracting more on a monthly basis from your current salary.
You have an anticipated Self Assessment tax liability for 2007/08 which the Revenue have decided to collect early from you by mucking about with your 2007/08 Coding. It is very naughty of them to do this as they are taking the tax from you FAR too early - it would normally be due on 31 January 2009. In addition, they will probably be collecting an incorrect amount anyway as very few people will know what their Self Assessment tax liabilities for 2007/08 will actually be until after 5 April 2008.
They are correcting some error in an earlier year's Tax Coding.
