The charge level is hovering either side of 13 (on Andreas 500 its a healthy 14 dropping to about 13 1/2 when the fans kick in) which is too low. It does crrep just the other side of 13 after a long run. It dies pretty quickly so needs constant charging. Also when I switch the ignition off the battery light stays on dimly for about a minute and fades away (this doesn't always happen just after a very long run). Suspect a short somewhere but would be useful to know any similar experiences. Its a pre cat with a mixture of precat, 500 and other wiring.
This is my last problem (other than the intermittent intermittent wiper but I know what that is), hopefully.

Stick a mmeter on first & make sure its not the voltmeter, I'd try sticking another battery on if you have a spare.

I would suspect a faulty electronic unit in the alternator.

had a similar problem on mine , found out it was the voltage regulator on the back of the alternator, got one from Lucas, about £35.

Likewiseyesyes

Sounds exactly the same as mine, and same fault.
I think you are spot on but just check the 100 amp fuse also

Cheers Guys.
No 100amp fuse.
Battery is less than 12 months old but is OK when charged, just something discharging it so need top solve the problem before changing the battery (2 yr guarantee) and its non maintenence as opposed to the maintenance one that was in there previously.
Any idea on the part number or just a V8 Rover voltage regulator? There's a Lucas outlet (LSUK) about 4 miles from where I work so easy to get hold of one.

There was a chap on fleabay selling Lucas service kits quite reasonable (£30 for all parts IIRC). The service kits are much more widely used than odd fitting front case we use as part of a quite common alt.
