4.0L Questions
Discussion
Sorry about this, I'm sure these have already been asked a million times!
I am about to buy a 4.0L Chim, but I am on a serious budget, much scanning of autotrader for cheap efforts etc.
So anyway here they are...
1). How much to fill up? and how far does it go?
2). I'm 24, have 9 points and plan on losing my licence in something that sounds a whole lot better than my current Almera! (please stop laughing) point being where is the best place to get insurance? does anyone else fit my profile, if so how much do you pay?
3). What do you think is a resonable yearly budget for servicing and fixing inevitable problems, I will be using the car everyday...
4). Wheres good to get serviced in the west essex, east london area?
Thanks guys, I love the cars, but I also love the whole community thing here. I just put up another post this morning and had three replies in 15 minutes!! Its like being in that BT advert
Cheers,
TC

1) At the moment about £40 - £45 a tank which will get you around 200 miles
3) Probably about £1000 a year for servicing is safe. Depending on mileage of course.
As for insurance, well I'm not entirely sure. The average around here seems to be about £1000 I think. People have mentioned Cheam Insurance and A1 as good. I tried Tesco's and they were a lot more than a lot of other places and they insisted on Tracker, however other people have had some success there. Oh, while I think about it elephant.co.uk I have heard are good as well.
As for dealers over that way, not sure myself, but I am sure that there are some!
Whatever you decide, enjoy!

Travis,
Its worth shopping around as quotes can vary enormously. Some companies will do very reasonable limited mileage policies. Here are a few suggestions: ; Sunninghill 01276-474844; Classicline TVR: 01455-891330; Peart: 01539-730666; Cheam: 0208-770-1001; A1: 01202-760022; TVR Car Club: 01491-578759; Norwich Union Direct: 0800-888112; Croftbrook: 01992-692364.
Personally, I went for Sunninghill. I live in London NW6, car parked on teh street, 2 years NCB, fully comp., include full RAC cover, 30 days of European cover, track days: £1530.
Don't whether your 9 points will be handicap though!
Good luck

I was 23 when I got my chimaera and it cost me 1500 quid in insurance. She is now on a classic policy for about 700 quid and I am now 26.
Servicing costs, I reckon 1k per annum is about right ( But bear in mind that you might want to have 500 quid backup money to fix any niggles )
Tank of petrol costs me about 30 quid ( I use ordinary unleaded as I have had the timing retarded ) and I get about 180 to a tank.
As you are in Essex, you can always come along to the Hurdlemakers arms in Woodham Mortimer and meet some cars and owners (1st Sunday of the month)

Where abouts are you in West Essex / East London ?
There are 3 Chimps & a Griff in Chingford. I get mine serviced at an independent garage in Chingford that I trust , one of the other guys only uses TVR dealers.
If you want to have a look over mine (4.0HC) and get any tips from a 'new' owner, e-mail me.

Cerbie, Griff, CHIMP.....only joking
I used to have a Griffith pre-cat 4l so the fuel thing is probably not relevant however...
2. I live in Essex too and I had 6 points 3 yrs ago when I had the Griff (I was 26yrs old)...and the best was still through A Manning on the TVR scheme at £820 per yr with my girlfriend at the time included...also greatly depends on the age of the car....when I chopped the Griff for the 4.5 Cerbie the only real difference for the rise in cost was the value of the car..insurance is now £1170 for the wife and I.
4. I was not overly impressed with the nearest dealers to Essex when they told me I needed new shocls when all it was was bushes and that the cam needed changing(it did not). For simple jobs I used a garage in Southend who have an excellent mechanic who has a great deal of experience on Rover V8's or for other TVR issues I used Tower View Race services in North London. Mark is excellent and is far far less cost than anyone else in my experience. Then again if you need TVR dealer facilities try Castle TVR in Stanstead....although I have had no reports of their service...
See you at the Hurdlemakers in January...

Just a quick note on Castle TVR in Stanstead - I am off there on Saturday (today is Friday) to get the mirror fixed. Seem a nice bunch of chaps and willing to do one hours work on a Saturday - you dont get that at many car dealerships...
Will let you know what I think later. However, Ted recently did an article on Castle and they do have some excellent facilities. The type of thing that most dealers would dream of - benefit of starting a fresh...

It means I would expect rather expensive rates but extremely knowledgeable people.
Oh yes. Service costs look like they might even by higher than Brundle, which I didn't think was possible.
However, they have one factory trained mechanic, and another guy who's ex-TVR, so they should know their stuff.
Insurance, there's two thing you should do:
1. Shop around, my worst quote was £2200 in other words f**k off and my best via Norwich Union at £550. I'm 34, 5 years NCB.
2. Buy legal protection insurance with your cover. It costs up to £50, with NU FOC. When the worst happens you will be grateful, believe me.
