First problem...didnt take long

Has the dash flagged up any ECU faults?
Back in the day when I had my MY02 WRX it had a (very slight) misfire under heavy load (i.e. all the time with me
)
It turned out to be a sensor of some kind, can't remember what, but they did say it was a common fault - cost about £120 from the dealer IIRC)

i agree with Charlie, MAF sensor for sure. I changed mine recently as it was giving low flow readings and kicking up a cel error too. Also it was running like a bag of shit so now i've changed it it's lovely again
Get a used one from a scooby breaker online like grade-a subaru. They test all their bits before they're mailed out and it's better than paying full wack brand new from a scoobie dealer.

Hi Bull it's PiG here.
This is a common scooby problem - spray brake cleaner into the boost solenoid and vacuum pipes alongside. Then go for a good blast. Job done. Also re-set ECU.
Any problems with this, give me a shout and I can help you but a quick search on scoobynet or the like will pop up decent instructions.

That was going to be my next suggestion This is a common scooby problem - spray brake cleaner into the boost solenoid and vacuum pipes alongside. Then go for a good blast. Job done. Also re-set ECU.

I found it HUGELY useful to take a photo of the pipe set-up around the solenoid before taking them all apart and running brake fluid through them. Then I could get the pipes back again in the correct places.
Make sure the engine oil-level is not too high, as this is what causes the problem in the first place allegedly.
If you've just bought the car, get an oil-change done ASAP anyway, for peace of mind at least.

edited to say that one of the pipes going to the wastegate has a little brass restrictor in it, worth checking it is clear too. I have some spares of these in my garage you can have if needed too.

If that is also fitted on the MY00, which pipe is that one please? From memory it is one of the thin vacuum pipes that is about 3 inches long to the right of the solenoid where 3 pipes join. You can feel the restrictor inside the pipe if you squeeze it then you will find it easily enough
