If a person has a conviction for a serious crime would this information be in the public domain and if so, where?

For serious crime, it'll likely have been reported in the (local/national) press(so possibly Internet-searchable), and court reports (not available on line in UK, AFAIK) - Streaky

Unless you can find it in a paper or the like someones criminal record is their business and their business alone.

If they are applying for a job or the like you can request they disclose convictions via a CRB check but otherwise its private.

Court records are public, but notoriously hard to search through. If you know the court and day of conviction that's a start.

Not internet searchable, but it's for GBH so fairly serious.

I was told someone I used to know fairly well has this in his closet, I doubted it but wonder if it's public info.

Court Record if you know the Court, name, date etc (probably get refused the first couple of times so may need to rant and/or make a Freedom of Information request). Other than that, try Press cuttings.

Try Google - input their full name and try guilty, GBH, convicted etc etc - any legal sounding words. had to do this the other day, came up with what i wanted eventually.
