Cheers

Dave,

Don't know seperate cost but have a look at my car's history - May 05 I had this done with some other work at the same time, so it may help with a ball park figure ?

Pete.

Their labour has gone up, so you can add another £200 to that.

If it's using oil, whilst the engine is stripped, I'd be inclined to throw another £1100 in the pot, and have A rebuild.

My car only did about 200 miles since the gaskets were both last changed. But the work was done by previous owner so I reckon I have no come back. In fact I would say the gaskets went on my way home from picking the car up!!

I am seeing emulsion on the dip stick but on dropping the oil twice now there is never any on the sump, or at least the drained oil??

Fingers crossed its not a cracked head! But only one way to find out really.

Ouch! But not bothered, I am commited to the car now and so am going to probably remove the whole engine and start from scratch!

Bye bye wallet!

Cheers.

Don't listen to him ^

If he's not careful I'm going to meet him in Reims again, and reintroduce him to the lift that attacked his car laugh

When you say replaced...... as in, he did it himself or a garage did it for him.

If it's the latter, I'd be inclined to give him a couple of hundred quid for his trouble, and ask him to take it back "under warranty" for you.

I presume the car's losing coolant or overheating.

If your not losing water and the oil is ok then everything is probably ok anyway.

It's quite common for the dipstick and under the oil cap to have pink/white residue if the car hasn't been used alot. Clean it off and use it and you'll probably find that the residue will not come back unless you don't use it that often.

I will second that.If a car is not used on a regular basis, then condensation builds up on the inside of the cap, causing the white emulsion you are seeing.

The gaskets were replaced by a garage, that already knows the car is now mine. I am also told the warrenties on some service work is hard to come by if its been over a few weeks or months. I mean who is to say it was not thrashed or ran dry?? Its a difficult area.

I do loose some coolant but the car does not overheat. But the oil level does not go up in proportion to the coolant loss? You would think it would keep going up as the sump filled with water.

Also when I drained the sump it was imulsion free. But its certainly there on the dipstick. It also appeared virtually staight away after a short test run of about 10 miles. I would not have thought that sufficent time for immulsion to build up from just condensation could it?

I am having a coolant pressure test and compression test done today and tommorow so hopefully have some news soon.

Fingers crossed!!

My water was disappearing out of the exhaust in "steam" form.
