I have grown up with three of their albums - Greatest Hits 1+2+3, and presumed that was all their good songs - as with most bands.

But having just listened to Queen, Queen 2 and A Night At The Opera, all I can say is wow!. What a band. So many good songs.

They were at their best between 1973 and 1980.

For some reason they always released cheese songs. I always loved the Prophet song, and Ogre battle! Plus, Princes of the Universe, and Gimme the Prize from Highlander smile

Yup, I did.
All show and no substance.

Nowhere whatsoever in the ranks of musically great live bands IMO.
I'll clear off now and leave the thread to the fanboys who'll no doubt be along in a minute.

There are some DTS discs of theirs around (Night At The Opera, The Game, etc) - they sound even better in 5.1 surround smile

I saw Queen live many times and was in the crowd for the 'We Are The Champions' video.
They were certainly a great live band, but for me outclassed by Lizzy (1977), U2 (1981) and The Undertones (1978-2007).

On record, Queen, Queen 2, Sheer Heart Attack. Got steadily worse, but quite slowly until The Game whan they really became crap.

'March Of The Black Queen' or 'Fairy Fellers Masterstroke' or 'Ogre Battle' are highlight tracks for me.

Definitely. The sad thing is, they were just picking up again when Freddie died.

(This may have been part of why Innuendo was much better than the few albums preceding it, though.)

It seems to have been a curse of a lot of bands from this era that they didn't really successfully transition into the 1980s. Hawkwind another one, although they had started coming off the boil after Warrior on the Edge of Time in '75 really.

Love nearly all of their albums. Such a versatile band with great talent. Each member wrote music, lyrics and sang - not many bands had/have that in-depth talent.

Going through my Queen albums, there's a track for every mood. biggrin

I'm tempted to buy Brian May's book on cosmology.

He finally finished his doctoral thesis - over 30 years after he gave it up to play in some obscure rock group.

It's about time he got himself a proper job (and got his hair cut).

I had a listen to News of the World on vinyl for the first time in years the other night. It didn't hit the spot for me I'm sad to say.
