If anyone here happens to own or has owned any of the following lenses, I would be interested to have some feedback (ideally with examples! smile )…

Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM
Sigma 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6 EX DG OS
Sigma 50-500mm f/4-6.3 EX DG HSM

TIA smile

I currently have the Canon 100-400L IS, which is without doubt one of the best lenses I've ever owned. I've had mine for almost three years now and wouldnt be without it. Focusing is very fast, build quality is excellent and its been dead reliable.

Some examples here. My photo's are right at the bottom of the first page..

Some more here...

I used to have the Sigma 50-500EX quite a number of years ago when using Minolta film camera's. Did get some very good results with it but its not quite as sharp as the Canon.

A good friend of mine has the 50-500 on a Nikon - it's a great piece of kit, about £300 less than the Canon and certainly versatile when you suddenly don't want to be zoomed right in.

He is 'Gixer' on here - his site www.corvetteclips.com has examples of the shots he has taken.

Have to say I'm usign a cheapo 100-400 (Vivitar) - if I pushed myself to upgrade then it would be tough choice between the Canon and the Sigma...

I don't own, but have used the Sigma 50-500. It's not as heavy as I expected, and not significantly larger than a 70-200 f/2.8. If you let the body / lens hang down from the neck strap, the inner part of the lens will gradually slide down due to the weight but there is a lock switch for this.

Results weren't fabulous compared to my Canon 70-200 but generally pretty good. My mate uses it handheld at 500mm but I just couldn't hold it steady. Coupled with the widest aperture being f/4 you need some pretty good light to shoot at 500mm.

I've just picked up the 100-400, lightly used for £650 delivered. Now that's a bargain.

Used in a couple of weekends in anger and it's a great lens.

This was last weekend at Prescott hill climb. Loved this chap, full of character

Got the 100-400 - love it.

Only pic I have already hosted is this - but my copy is sharp, fast to focus and IS is very handy.

CLick to see a higher res due to PH squash.

The decision of having to choose between the two...
