I was driving to work in slow moving traffic (almost standstill) and on the other side (slightly behind me as he came to a stop)was a big police van...all i heard next was "BMW driver" what? i thought (im in a BMW!) turned round and "yeh you put your seatbelt on" all this was said over a tannoy announcing thing. oops put my belt on then as traffic started moving i had to drive off. i didnt even realise i didnt have it on! are they allowed to announce things over their tannoy announcing thing at 8.30am? do you think they will follow this up or would they have had to stop me? whats the fine for not having your belt on?

Perhaps time to reassess your driving habits since it's sensible, and also a legal requirement, to wear a seatbelt. I'm sure the BiB can tell you off as loudly and publicly as they like.

Doubt you will get a fine in the post, it would have been given then and there. I would think they got enough out of it pissing themselves to bother with the fine. biggrin

No. It's been dealt with, you've been admonished and will no doubt buckle up in future. Move on! biggrin

Use of discretion. I'm sure it worked too. You won't forget the tannoy in a hurry!

I'd love one of those in my car. Just think what fun could be had:

"Could you get out of third dear?"

"The limit is 60!"

"Is it Sunday every day?"

"Is it foggy?"

"Gizza clue!"

"The inside lane is clear!"

Mmmm.. how long before legislation requires that cars are fitted with a sensor to check if a car moves away with any of the passengers un-belted, which then automatically sends a signal to a central database to issue a fine for the offence?

It's all very do-able...

Bit 1984... don't some cars already have a sesnory doodad so that if the car moves forward sans driver seatbelt a little buzzer goes off? Or is that just for leaving your lights on (followed by "Yes I know there on, shut up&quotwink?

Yep all sorts of things in some cars. If theres someone in the seat it arms the air bag and expects you to put your belt on or it'll illuminate somehting on the dash / sound a buzzer. Worryingly if you have a girlfriend under 8.5 stone (I didn't say wife, because by then they'll be 18 stone) Jag X-types dont know they are there, so dont arm the airbag apparently.... A friend had some long discussions with his dealer and I dont think it was ever resolved.

Now StarTraq’s new unique system, available with Teletraffic’s new DVD camera, can capture images of drivers not wearing seat belts while driving and process the offence, in the same way that speeding offences are managed. The offence will be captured utilising StarTraq’s StarVision.

The image of the DVD will be identified to determine if it is a speed, seat belt, red light or mobile phone offence. It will then provide the verifier with the image to determine if prosecution of the violation should proceed.

An operator on the side of the road will spot a vehicle where the driver is not wearing a seatbelt. They will press a trigger which will capture the details and denote that a violation has taken place. When this is processed through StarVision the operator will identify what type of offence is being captured rather than speeding and will send it down the appropriate predefined workflow path.

You could have a great time if you were just generally 'supervising' slow traffic... "Oi you, you in the chavved up Polo. Get off the phone, you pillock."

Wouldn't have thought you could get fined. Good policing though, something like that is going to be much more effective in making you remember the belt in the future.

Btw can't have an incar sensor for fines etc because for manouvers with reversing in them you don't legally need to wear them.
