I am in a similar position and can't decide what to go for.
The bible says a 4.0, 96 onwards, without PAS should be running 205 55 15 front and 225 50 16 rear. A 4.0 with PAS should run 225 50 15 front and 225 50 16 rear.
I have 4.0 with PAS and bought some estorils with 225 50 15 front and 245 45 16 rears which feel much more planted than the 205 55 15 and 225 50 16 I had on previously. I have just ordered some Toyo T1-R's 245 45 16 rears from camskill at £85.20 each but can't decide on fronts. http://camskill.co.uk/ I will either go 225 50 15 or 205 50 15(rather than the 205 55 15 as i'm not keen on the beach buggy look.)
If your car is a 5.0 then without PAS the bible states 205 50 15 front and 245 45 16 rear. With PAS 225 50 15 front and 245 45 16 rear
This is a useful site for tyre sizes http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html
Hope that helps!

hello, my car is a 96 with power steering yet my front tyers are 205/55/15.ive checked the tyre calculater and the standard rear tyers have a circumference of 1983.6mm and the 245 have a cir of 1969.46 which is about 1/2 inch so there will not be a problem with the speedo .the other things you need to consider the the (J) WHEEL WIDTH . IF THE TYERE IS TO WIDE YOU CAN GET TYRE BULGE .also there could be a problem with rubbing on the arche daren

There are some tyres which are nominally road legal but are only intended for track use. For example they may have so little tread that they are dangerous in the rain, or they may be so soft that they wear out very quickly on the road, or they may be so light that they are damaged easily. It wouldn't be illegal to use these on the road, but you'd only ever want to drive short distances under ideal conditions.

There are other tyres which are simply not approved for road use and hence fundamentally illegal on the road, slick tyres for example.
