Some bright green fluid has sprayed under pressure the front of my 4.5 engine. It's not coolant. Could it be air con? The pressure seems to be heat related i.e. its only under pressure when the engine is hot. I'm not a spanner man so all advice welcome. Cheers.

If your sure its not coolant then it is air con gas thats leaking. Its green because of the dye they put in so you can do just what you have done, see leaks.
Now here's the hard bit, to trace the leak.
One of the air con pipes on mine was rubbing on the the steering rack etc. cover under the bonnet, just in front of the air con compressor, just as the pipe bends down the front of the engine. It could also be coming from the condensor in front of the radiator if a stone or something has hit it.
Just try and see where the green stains start. Good luck.

Thanks for the advice. Sure its not the coolant - its blue.

Its sprayed the whole of the front of the engine (a right mess) so finding the source is going to be fun! I must have lost about half a pint given what was on the drive afterwards.

How come it only seems to be under pressure when the engine is hot or I am wrong here? Also, I assume once the leak is sealed then its a re-pressure job by an expert?

All help appreciated.

I'd bet on the coolant, not on the gas.

Have you checked the Air-Con is working? Re the Green dye they put in to detect leaks, they only add a small amount, so wipe it all off and see if it happens again.
If after that there is no evidence of leaking, AND the Air Con does not work then I reckon even Hercule Poirrot would say it's the Air Con smile

Edited to correct my Wine induced spelling and grammatical errors !

Probably teaching granny about egg sucking, but if it is refrigerant under pressure - watch your eyes (and hands) when you are looking for the leak - it can cause realy seriously nasty eye injuries.

Thanks to all - It'll be the weekend before I can investigate further.

Ireland - I checked the coolant and it's blue, the stuff emitted was fluorescent green, plus the water temperature was fine, so my money's on the air con. I always have the window open in the summer so given the amount the air con gets used it might as well come out!

Its the Air Con. Can't see exactly where the leak is coming from because its stopped. Probably run our of gas. Will have to find an air con man to fix but at least I can drive the car wink

It's good when someone takes the time and trouble to come back on and tell us what the problem was.

PS The Air con gas will have all leaked out in a matter of minutes. The idea of that green dye is to help pinpoint where the leak is coming from, any ideas? If it sprayed the front of your engine chances are it's Corroded pipes or bad connections. If it was the condensor it would have sprayed that area of the car.

Thanks Jensen

I think they'll probably have to re-charge the air con to find the leak but I'll leave it to the experts now.
