Points scoring in 2008
Discussion
We`ve already been told there will be one dropped score for 2008 which I think is an excellent idea as it keeps the championship alive to the end of the season. It also allows teams who suffer a poor result through no fault of their own a chance to stay in contention.
There has been talk of a "Joker" that can be played at a round of your chosing. Not sure that`s a good thing, you`re introducing a lucky dip element into the championship and as such cheapening the results.
As to how the points are awarded could I suggest the following:
1st place 10 points plus 1 point for every starter in the class up to a maximum of 10 points. Subsequent finishers are awarded one point less for every place they are behind the leader.
As things stand someone competing in a class where there are only a handful of starters will be at a destinct advantage. If there are only 3 or 4 cars finishing in your class you`re clearly going to gain more points than a driver of equal merit who has 10 or 12 cars in their class.
You might also allow cars to nominate their points to be awarded as though they were in the class above if they are concerned about a small grid size in their own class (although other cars in the class who choose to compete in class will still have that car counting to their points tally so as not to disadvantage them unfairly).
As a final thought you might add a point per completed hour of the race, either planned or completed by each car. For the 2nd part to work you would have to score points based on starters rather than those cars that have completed 70% or 80% of race distance. After all a car completing a single hour race has had to less work than a car who only completed half distance of a 4 hour race and scored a DNF
Finally I suggest Drivers are awarded points rather than the current (and rather strange) arrangement of the car being awarded points. If a car is repaired during the season does that mean it`s points are lost as in the game of conkers? How can it be that a car driven by 4, 5 or 6 different drivers each possibly an expert of that particular circuit beats a pair of drivers who compete together in the spirit of the sport. We celebrate the drivers in motorsport, not the individual car.
A team award is a different thing all together. For that you either take the best result a team scores in a weekend (so as not to disadvantage single car teams against 2 or 3 car teams). You could even give the team award based on subjective values maybe giving each team in the championship a vote to score as they saw fit.
Some ideas to mull over and debate.

James has published new pit stop rules and power to weight formulae on his web site. (I think the power to weight has changed by allowing a 90ks driver instead of an 80 kgs one - better for me!!!).
I like Henrys idea of allocating points consumate with the number of starters in the class but I doubt its workable. A more crude "fix" would be to award half points (say) if the entry was less than 5 cars. I dont think you should allow cars in one class to "upgrade" themselves into another either. If Britcar 2008 is going to work the class structure as defined in the regualtions must be strictly adherred to - at all times. I absolutely agree with 2PriestFerrari on this one.
I have given 2008 a lot of thought over the past few weeks. I really want Britcar to work and I think James has a good basis for a good championship. I have been involved for 2 years and it has cost me a fortune and I think it may just work next year. Thus I have decided to stick with it and enter and try to make it work from iside the championship. If James back down on his commitments it will be the last time I enter but something inside tells me it will be beter this year! Lets hope the something inside is not the curry I had last night!!
Cheers,
Richard.
