Here's my problem. I have applied to have a private plate transferred onto my car. So currently the DVLA have my V5 and MOT certificate. The transfer is taking longer than expected. My tax ran out yesterday and I can't retax as I don't have my documents!

What is likely to happen if I'm stopped, or ANPR'd?
Does driving without tax invalidate my insurance?

Thanks,
Philip

You could be charged with failing to display a valid tax disc..

i have forgotten to renew before and got away with it for nearly a month (paid up as soon as i realised!) and did not get a fine from DVLA. but be careful cos if you get stopped the police they will pass the details on to DVLA saying they saw you driving without tax and you will get a fine of approx 100-200.

do it online. you dont need any documents.

Jeremy, you have been lucky,,, I now believe the Ad about the DVLA computer, after a friend had his car clamped (on private land) after not renewing tax. He came home from work to find it clamped with a notice on w/s.... with charges rising every 24 hours to have clamp removed. This part was resolved as car was on private land and clamp removed without charge, but he taxed car ASAP!

Bear in mind that the offence of failing to display a valid tax disc is separate from the offence of keeping or using an unlicensed vehicle on a public road. As such, you could be prosecuted if you fail to display a valid tax disc, despite the fact that your vehicle may be correctly taxed.

Having changed to a private plate recently i found the best way was to go to the local DVLA office and change the details there.
This took about 30 mins including waiting time.
They gave me the new tax disc, returned my MOT and kept the V5 which was then returned by mail after two weeks.

Clamped by whom?

As it is private land then no-one had the right to "enter the private land" for the purpose of clamping. Common Trespass comes to mind.

What was "their" explanation for entering on to private land to enforce something which is not an offence whilst on said private land?

Don't I need the reference numbers from the documents to do it online? Great idea though, as it does suggest that I can press them and maybe get it done on the phone. Thanks.
