Trundling along in my vintage car at 35/38mph a smallish Q formed behind me on the single carraigeway section of A140. The Q amounted to about ten cars and with under half a mile to duelled section I decided not to pull over and let Q pass me. The 4x4 driver started to take aggressive road positioning and demonstrated his anger at being held up for about 4/5 minutes in the 50mph speed limit section.
As soon as the duelled section was upon us 4x4 man booted it past me and then suddenly braked. He noticed the speed cam'car and the BiB with the radar gun poised. So I most likely saved them all from speeding tickets (inadvertenly). Wonder if they still cursed me as they passed whistle I think the BiB did.

Story sounds like boocks.

You say it was for about half a mile, at nearly 40 mph - but then that you held them up for 4-5 mins???

So, either you held them up for MANY MILES, or you were going much slower.

Either way...is holding up traffic for 5 miles really what you consider reasonable??

But you prob pissed him off by not pulling over therefore CAUSING him to boot it at the first opportunity and nearly get caught! You probably made others do the same as well in order to make up the 5 minutes they lost when they were queuing behind you! So no you were not being helpful…

You were causing an obstruction - once the traffic was 5 vehicles behind you, you ought to have pulled over when it was safe to do so.

It was safe to do so half a mile later on the dual carriageway bit apparently?

OOPPPS, Sorry, I should'nt have expected you to consider that cars were overtaking me prior to this episode, therefore the cars to which I refer were not the same ones being held up thru out my journey.4x4 man was easing up the Q as we drove along, cor look another passed me, Blimey did'nt expect to have to explain that laugh

OP story sounds OK to me - within the bounds of pub stories.

I see no problem in a vhicle like this proceeding on at its own speed. Even milk floats, horses and (yes, I will even admit this) bicycles have a right to be on the road and they are not always as fast as me/my car in a given situation. Nothing for it but to follow until a safe overtake presents and then be ready and able to take it.

Half a mile to DC - usually signposted anyway so 4X4 would have known. Why would he get upset?

As to saving other traffic - I would have thanked you for that.

If being held up by another road user CAUSES you to boot it then give your license back. You are temprementally unfit to be in command of a potentialy deadly weapon.

(my personal views, so am prepared to be flamed)

Totally agree. If the drivers behind aren't capable of safely overtaking a slow moving vehicle (be it vintage car, tractor, horses, bikes or whatever) and controlling their temper while behind the vehicle then they should be looking at their standard of driving.

IIRC the "5 vehicles queueing behind and you should pull over" rule is American, not British. Good idea though.

Oddly enough, I see that kind of courtesy frequently when driving in Scotland - car/caravan or motorhome pull into laybye and lest string of cars pass - but I haven't seen it in England or Wales.

I always put that down to the volume of traffic. In the South, if you pull in each time 5+ cars are behind you then your own speed will probably fall to 5-10 miles per day!

The Scots also have useful road signs like "Frustration causes accidents, please allow overtaking."

I always use common sense when out and about in my vintage wagon, keep close eye on whats happening behind and try and judge when best to 'get out the way'. Recently, again on A140 in my vintage I suddenly had a Q which came from nowhere, seemingly. Pulled over into a layby ASAP and enjoyed watching a whole load of sporty stuff give an thumbup as they went on their way. Headed up by Ferrari, all sorts of Lotus and an couple of hot hatches, all very tasty indeed. I remember driving my Griff' and being in a Q headed by slower traffic and try to bear this in mind when in my vintage. But sometimes you just cannot win. Hope I've redeemed my former sins.tank

Exactly so, I try and prefer to stick to 'B'roads and quite lanes as much as possible. Also after you have pulled in to let other road users pass its not always easy to get back on road, such is the sloth like increase in speed in vintage stuff. I know some say certain vehicles should no longer be allowed on the road, but would we really want to discard our motoring heritage to decay away in garages unused?

Do not hold up a long queue of traffic, especially if you are driving a large or slow-moving vehicle. Check your mirrors frequently, and if necessary, pull in where it is safe and let traffic pass.
What constitutes a long queue? 5 cars? 10 cars?

It's not a "you MUST NOT" so not law, just recommendation. As you say, what constitutes a long queue? In the highlands of Scotland it may be 2 cars!

I reckon the M25 at any hour between 5.00am to 8.00pm, bl**dy nightmare.
