Tech query - Fuel Pressure Reg/ ECU
Discussion
One I would appreciate any tech advice on, Chim 500 95/6 :-
having recently reported to a local indy during a routine oil change that the car was running a bit rich from the sooty exhaust deposits & spark plugs, otherwise it was running absolutely fine.
On connection of the fault code reader to the ECU it came up with code 23 'Low Fuel Pressure'. As the car was running okay we agreed to leave until it was quiet in December before investigating. Since then the fuel pressure has been all over the place yesterday on a run out to Loton Park to support the Sprint series.
The question is, can the fault code reader influence a fault or should the ECU be re-set after confirming the code. It seems too much of a coincidence that for a year its exhibited the rich running symptoms without affecting performance and yet immediately aferwards I develop an apparent fuelling issue?

The fault code reader cannot influence or clear fault codes. The only way to clear them is by disconnecting the ECU for at least 10 seconds.
Due to the large range of fuel mixture compensation provided by the ECU, it is possible to run with this type of fault without being aware of it - until you plug the display unit in that is!
The standard-issue TVR software does not turn on the "Check Engine" or "MIL" lamp when fault codes are present. With earlier cars (that don't have a separate MIL lamp) the lamp isn't even wired correctly so it will never come on even if the software uses it!
Sooty exhaust can have several causes, amongst which is injector problems. This could also cause the fault code to be set. It could also be that the fuel pressure is too high, or that the wrong chip is fitted in the ECU.
14CUX diagnostics are very sophisticated, and generally accurate. The condition for the fuel supply code (23) to be set is when one or both banks are on maximum negative correction by the associated lambda sensor, and the difference between both banks is under a certain level.
