All,

I am SERIOUSLY hacked off and wanted to pass on a word of warning for anyone buying or selling a car.

I advertised my 355 on PH and had a call last week. The guy came out and checked over the car and made me an offer, we haggled then agreed and a deposit was going to be paid that day, pending an HPI type check.

The guy used the autocheck service available on the PH site.

Next thing i know the guy says that he wants out of the deal as i have the car advertised with 15k miles and the autocheck service says i purchased the car with 38k miles on it over one year ago!!!! Basically suggesting i am a fraud!
I said this must be a mistake as I know i have every MOT, service stamp etc to prove the mileage is genuine..
He said if i could prove it conclusively and get it confirmed by the DVLA then he would re-consider pulling out - but now had a bad feeling.

I contacted autocheck and they said they would investigate and get back to me.. no calls so i chased the next day as i needed to keep the purchaser happy. They said it looks like a mistake and were waiting for the MOT's. So to speed things up i gave them the last few MOT ref numbers.

I then called again last Thursday and they confirmed that the mileage was incorrect on the search and would be amended accordingly.. I also asked that they call the purchaser and explain.
He had not heard on Friday so i chased in the afternoon. But still nothing and still showing on the search..

I got a call from the Purchaser on Sunday saying that it was taking to long to confirm my claim and that he was too uncomfortable to continue with the purchase.

So I called today and the guy was off on Friday and no-one had followed up on the notes... but HAD concluded on Thursday that my claim of the incorrect mileage was indeed correct and now proven.
Basically when i sold my 911 and removed my personal plate, waited the few weeks to get the retention cert back and then swapped on to the ferrari, there had been an admin error and the mileage from the Porsche had been used on the Ferrari records!!!!!!!

To say I am pi55ed off is an understatement.

So I have lost the sale on the 355 and now lost the deal i had on the Gallardo!.

So a word of warning to anyone buying.... check the history as well as an HPI type check.. and to anyone selling, do a check yourself to be sure you don't risk losing a deal if someone does a check!.

I now have to write to autocheck.. but I am guessing there is nothing that can be done.!

It appears mileage information can come in via any 3rd party - worrying!

Cheers

Nick

idiots sitting at a desk with incorrect records, i'd want an apology at least, bet you don't hear another word from them, tossers. saying that if i was the buyer i'd want more proof from them, seeing your records appeared correct.
i wish you luck next time around.

Mileage recordings on 'Hpi' reports when cherished plate transfers have happened are invaribly a hit and miss affair.

As mileages are normally recorded when a vehicle changes hands, which leads to number plates being swapped and any entered mileages going all over the place

I've seen cars with mileages entered two days after registration of many thousands of miles which would simply be impossible.

NO help in your case, but if th guy cant sift through all your paperwork and reach the conclusion its an error then, i suggest his the wrong man to be buying a car such as yours privately

Above all, mileages recorded on HPI reports DO NOT CONSTITUE due dilliegence in relation to the law (and would have no sway in a court room) unlike a VMC (Vehicle mileage check) report in which each of the previous owners are endevoured to be contacted

Nick, they just write to the last owner, and if that person is not too clever with the writing, you are then stuffed. Also the data entry person properly does not give a sh1t what is keyed in.

Wrong.... a 'VMC' report is what you are refering to

Mileage on 'HPI' reports is obtained from previous 'HPI' enquires, and the voluntary mileages entered on DVLA documentation and inforamtion of various other databases such as leasing companies

As an example of how corruptable the data contained on HPI's data is, i could take a random registration, HPI it entering a mileage of 150k and next time someone else HPIs that reg entering the correct reg, then surprise surprise theres a mileage discrepancy

I had the same when i was looking at a Noble a while back , checked the car with Autocheck on here and the milage came back as way out , about 40-50k out if i recall even though i was sure it was a mistake as the condition of the car and history backed up the odometer . However i pulled out as it would just cause so much hassle down the line trying to resell . I think its a problem caused by sellers filling in the V5 incorrectly when selling the car and returning it to the DVLA .
Get it sorted now or you will keep having the same problem and never sell it .
