Police have urged youngsters not to give in to peer pressure after a 10-year-old boy was sentenced for stealing a car while banned from driving. The boy, who cannot be named, appeared at Hastings youth court charged with five motoring offences. He is thought to be Britain's youngest ever joyrider.

At the same court a week ago he admitted stealing his father's car, driving while disqualified and driving with no insurance. The offences arose when he took his father's Vauxhall Cavalier on June 1. He was stopped near his home in Ore, Hastings, East Sussex, and reported by his father, who saw him take the vehicle.

Today he was sentenced for the offences and for two other offences to which he admitted - stealing a car on May 24 and stealing a pedal cycle on May 19.

The 4ft 5in tall boy was disqualified from driving following a motoring offence in December last year.

Today magistrates sentenced him to an 18-month supervision order and banned him from driving for a further two years. They also issued a 12-month parenting order to his parents, forcing them to adhere to certain stipulations regarded the control of their son. The family left court without comment.

After the hearing Chief Inspector Ken Taylor, the district commander of Hastings, said: "This was an issue not just about the boy's safety but that of the public as well.

"Driving a car is not a game and even trained drivers can make mistakes. It is a shame to saddle yourself with a criminal record which can have a detrimental effect on the rest of your life. It's hard enough to make your way without that."

"Youngsters will get a lot more out of life by helping others rather than turning to crime."

'Banned him driving for a further two years'

I hope that means they've banned him for a further 2 years after the normal driving age of 17...

This takes the piss.

Imagine the conversation:

'What you up to tonight then Dave?'

'Oh, we're going joyriding, fancy it?'

'Nah, cant, lost me license'

FFS!

I dont know the law here but perhaps the justice meted out is limited in what it can do for minors with traffic offences

Anyone know?
