I've followed F1 for a number of years, with my brother in law being a former Maclaren mechanic. In my opinion, in recent years, the whole F1 experience became rather dull with Michael Schumacher generally leading/winning. The arrival of Lewis Hamilton has awakened the sport and I may actually start attending Silverstone again (particularly if entry prices continue their current downward trend towards something approaching realistic - In the late nineties, early 2000's, Noble ownership nearly made more financial sense than the exhorbitant cost charged for a ticket to the British GP!). The overtaking fight between Felipe Massa and Robert Kubica(fair but firm) is the kind of sporting spectacle most fans want to see. I think that the in-car footage conveys the commitment and car control of both drivers, in extreme weather conditions, far more clearly than the ITV footage shown on the day managed. Fran

Would have been easy top cry off and say it was too dangerous to try and grab that place at the end.
Especially given they were only battling for 6/7th place. Massa got it in the end didn't he? Seem to remember him ending up on the run off area onto the main straight and crossing some grass to get back on the track before crossing the line.

As an aside, does anybody else think those tracked run off areas are a bit crap? A few years ago there would be gravel traps evrywhere - nobody seems to get punished for mistakes anymore. Hamilton ran off the road in Spa only to get straight back on again and only lost a couple of seconds. If the Senna/Prost/Mansell/Piquet generation had done that it would have been end of race for them. Plus the gravel seems to work quite well. Just can't see how a tracked run off is going to help if someone's suspension gives way half way round a 150mph corner. Not a lot of speed retardation there.

Each pass in that clip was made by going off track so, yes, that doesn't seem right.

True--in a sense, it's a different kind of racing (almost like a video game)--but you cannot deny that driver and car safety are both enhanced with properly designed paved run-off areas. And it's also true that the stewards can impose penalties if use of the "extra track" is abused.
