my starter motor is doing the funny noise bit and i am not prepared to pay some body to get it out, do i go in through the injectors /coil packs to get it out or what.it seems strange that there is a lot of mistique about this motor ,people talk about it in hushed tones as though it was built using
left handed spanners and five sided sockets, even the tvr sprint mag says nothing ,after all its a crank pistons a few cams a nd a block ,after v12 jags its piece of p1ss. is there a manual available

I dont know if yours is a 4.2 or 4.5, I'd guess the procedure is much the same apart from removing the inlet hoses.
It is possible to do it yourself, fiddly and tricky but not rocket science, but a good Indie should be able to the whole job in an hour or so.
You will need a good Allen Key socket set (not sure which size, just buy a kit from machine Mart/Halfords, about a tenner)with a good long enough handle.
Remove the rear engine cover, then disconnect battery - don't forget to do thie ! Now remove the rear most intake hoses. You may have to disconnect the throttle linkage I can't remeber. The starter motor is accessed throgh the gap that you have just created, Disconnect all the electrical connections, then undo the 2 Allen headed bolts, be careful when undoing these, do NOT try undoing them by applyoing a steady very firm pressure, you need to CRACK them, put the socket on firmly and a good hard, sharp bang. As far as I can remember the 2 bolts holding it are at a 10 o'clock and 2 o'clock position as you look along the line of the engine.
Starter motor then is 'wiggled' out through the gap.
PS Wait until a few otheres confirm/correct what I've said before rushing off and doing it.
