I've just received my snazzy new set of plates from Fancyplates.com (thank you to whoever mentioned these on here last week!). The thing is, although the rear plate is the Griffith translucent type, it seems to let a lot less light through than my previous one.
Can the bulbs behind the plate be upgraded to brighter ones and if so, is it a b*stard of a job to do it? i.e. pulling bits of glued down carpet to bits! You can't get into them from the No plate recess I know that.
Any clues or experiences please?

I lined the cavity behind my number plate with silver foil, others I think have suggested white Fablon or similar.

I'm happy enough with the brightness of mine but I suppose it depends on how lit up you want your rear number plate to be??????

I would have thought the darker the better, purely for asthetics reasons of course.

Got my Cerb ones from fancy plates too and they are backed with a grey plastic sheet which lets np light through. I found the same problem, apparently you can specify white backing which is better (like the front) but like you found out when it was too late.

Firstly dont attempt to peel the plastic off as it will ruin the plate.

Two solutions: Either trim around the plate taking off about 5mm all around letting the light seep around the sides for a halo effect.

OR

Leave them as they are and only worry about explaning it off you get stopped. (chances are as you cant read it the dark you wont get your number noted for speeding at night).

Stealth is the key!

They're the ones Matthew - Grey backing instead of white! I rang this morning to point out that if a normal solid number plate is say 100%, and a TVR translucent plate is 50% - his translucent ones are somewhere around the 90% mark... translucent they not!

My only concern is from a legality point of view. I suppose I'm now going to have to send him some proper backing, cos the plates themselves are really nice (woah... number plates? nice? now THAT, as my wife would be very quick to point out is sad!)

You'll have problems at MOT time if the plate is not lit up.

I know... quick swap to my old one when the time is right... though as I said - I'm going to send Fancyplates a piece of proper backing so they can do me a proper one.

Always get your Tiv MOT'd at an approved dealer preferably the same that regularly services the beast and hey NO PROBLEMS.

Exactly what I warned everybody about on other threads. I was the first to get "translucent" plates from fancyplates.com - and they were plain perspex! - Not reflective. Eventually they got back to me with the alternative backing - yes it's grey. I stuck foil behind the plates too (you can't uprate the bulbs). It failed the MOT because they couldn't see if it was lit (during the day. But it was only "noted", along with the headlamp adjustment (too difficult) and I got a certificate.

Be warned.

I got my plates from fancyplates with grey backing after asking for translucent. Do they know what "translucent" means as my one does not allow any light through at all and I just thought they`d sent the wrong type!

If its just more brightness required, LEDs could be the way to go. I have LED interior and boot light.
