I get the "Change gear" warning before the engine has got warm, under gentle accelleration and usually around 3500rpm. Is this normal? Out of interest can somebody expalin what triggers it (oil pressure etc) as I'd prefer to look knowledgeble and relaxed next time it does it when the wife's in the passenger seat looking concerned about the red light and bleeping noise...

At a quess Id say the engine temperature sensor has a say in when the light comes on. The reason it comes on so early when cold is as a warning not to rev your engine whilst cold... Id call it the dimwit light for people with no mechanical sympathy or very deep pockets!

yes there is a table that you can use to limit revs after a cold crank where the ect is lower than a set limit during start up. You can even set this to be in effect for a given time after every start (requires software to do so).

I dont believe it is based on anything other than ect

Thanks both. I agree with the dimwit comment..just thought it may be coming on prematurely, and indicated another problem.. as my previous experience of such warnings kick in at 4k+
