Living Overseas - Drivers Licence Question.
Discussion
I'm soon moving to France to live and have been looking at my Drivers Licence to see what I need to do.
When I move I will be selling my property in the UK and arranging for all post to be forwarded to my parents house for tehm to strip out the circulars and send me a weekly parcel of my post.
Reading my licence I must give them my permanent address but this must be a UK address.
So, and here's the question, what do I tell the DVLA for both my cars and my drivers licence??
If I were to put my parents address and then was stopped there's no way I would remember their address - how would that look?

As far as I know, and what I do.You do not have to live in UK to have a Licence, but you must use an address that you can be contacted at, so most
people use a family member.
Also, If you intend to get a forign licence then many countries keep your UK one and can not find it when you come back. so what many people do is write to DVLA saying they moved, (to the family members address) and the licence was lost in the move,, you get a duplicate in the new address for yourself and you 'lose' the original when you hand it in for a forign licence.

If you move to another EU country like you are, you are supposed to swap the licence for one in the country you will be living in. They will take your UK licence and send it to the DVLA. Even if you have a duplicate of your UK one its not legal.
If you think of it as follows, it makes sense - there is no such thing as a UK (or French, or...) driving licence -there is only an EU licence, which is issued by the country you live in

My son has moved to live in France. However, he wants to have his own car to use in the UK whenever he is here, but the DVLA won't accept a foreigh address. So he has used my address as the address on the V5 for his UK-based car and has kept it insured via my address with a UK insurer.
He is about to exchange his UK licence for a French one and is re-registering his main car in France and will insure it there.
It all seems quite straightforward. The only thing which could be an issue is if he lends his UK-based car to a friend and that friend should go through a speed camera at over the limit, the NiP would come to my address and I would forward it, unopened, to him. However, he is currently working in Germany until January and only goes to his permanent French home about once every 6 weeks. What would happen in that eventuality is anyones guess. I suppose that under S174, he could not know and with resonable diligence could not establish who was driving at any specific time, since I have his permission to drive it, as does his 'wicked stepmother' and his step-sister. How would the CPS proceed with such a case?

Spend thousands on police trips to France and Germany to seek evidence to prosescute for a PCoJ followed by giving up as its a genuine case and filing it is the 'too hard' binHe is about to exchange his UK licence for a French one and is re-registering his main car in France and will insure it there.

I live in France and believe that you are allowed to drive on your UK license unless you have a infraction.
In my case I was caught doing Grand Vitesse , it was a fair cop and they took my license away on the spot. I had to call out the mrs and a friend to collect me and my car. After the 1 month ban I had to got to the prefecture to get a French license to replace the UK one. Dont be fooled the French are now very hot on speeding.
