About to buy a 40D online with B&H in New York.

My choice is only body only or body and 28-135 IS for 200$ more.

Now personnally I would not want that lens as my day to day lens, I find 28 mm too narrow, and will purchase the 17-85 IS.

Would you buy the kit anyway and sell the lens on E-Bay ?

I mean 200$ for a 28-135 IS....

Thoughts ?

28-135IS is the 17-85IS but made for FF sensors, the 17-85 is a bit improved tho.

Look on ebay see what there going for, or try swap for a 17-50 tamron.

They go for 220 GBP on fleebay so I suppose it's a no brainer to get the whole kit for an extra 200$....

I paid £200 for a good 2nd hand 28-135.

...and there HAVE been occasions where I've found it a little narrow...but it's a decent walkabout lens for the price, and feels like a good bit of kit.

Have you considered the new 17-55 EF-S? I'm moved to this from the 28-135, as 28 just wasn't cutting it with the 1.6 crop on the 20D (now 40D). Had it for 3 weeks and it's a big step up from the 28-135 in every respect, apart of course from the reach.

I looked at it but the 17-85 IS really has everything as an every day lens, inclduing teh wide angle for scenery shot and a bit of reach with the 85 mm top end.

I have a 30mm F1.4 for indoor work in low light (I love that lens), and a 90-300 for the odd long reach job.

I am looking for a lens that I can use for 95% of the ime, and 17-85 really fits that bill.

Its also slow and soft wide open with more distortion and CA than the alternative. Its not a terrible lens and for $200 well worth the money.
