I thought this was the big build up before she crushed me like they usually dohehe

But no, she was serious.

So where's the best place to get one?? Before she changes her mind.

Prefer new, but a good SH will also do the same jobyes
A SWMBO, or the lens?

I'd have reservations about a second hand SWMBO...

I think Poah mentioned he was selling his 100-400 recently ?

I've got one of these as well, but it's not for sale at the moment.

IF they have one in stock, then yes.

If not, then forget it, as they don't actually bother telling you it's going to be a while until you chase it up...and keep chasing...and keep chasing...and keep chasing 9 months down the line!!!

It's available for £850 brand new from One Stop Digital.

Looks like that's where I'll be sending my £££'s up to nowyes
100-400 is a finiky beast... we've tried several. A good one is fantastic, otherwise they're very average.

Poah has a good 'un... but you pays your money, you takes your choice...

Surely they should be all the sameconfused

I'm also considering the 28-300 USM IS L, that way I could get rid of a few of my older lenses
Anyone know how these shape up??

Then there's this one, what does the DO stand for?? EF 70-300mm f4.5-5.6 DO USM IS
In theory, but the 100-400 does seem to suffer from varying optics - moreso than other L series lenses.

DO - Diffractive Optics. Basically clever glass that makes for a smaller, more compact lens. Gets mixed reviews.

It's all so bloody confusing. How about the 28-300??

Is it trying to do to much?

If I bought that I could sell my 55-200, 75-300 and 28-135.

I could then get somthing like an EFS 10-20 and 17-85 and I've just about covered the whole range I'll ever use.
Never looked at the 28-300, so can't comment.

28-135 is supposed to be good, and I like the 75-300 IS that we have, never used a 55-200.

Guess you could have one lens for all, but then it's like hi-fi separates and an all in one... useful to have different lenses for different things.

Other (but more expensive) option is the 70-200 f2.8 IS with teleconvertors...

All depends on what you want to photograph.

Check out DPREVIEW and google for "Fred miranda" - no substitute to trying a lens in a shop... and you've got a few months yet. smile

We had a nose at the Tamron's, and I'll save you some time... don't bother (IMO).

THE lens to have is the 70-200 f/2.8 IS, but it ain't cheap. frown Seems to take the 1.4x and 2x teleconvertors well too, although apparently the 2x is a bit soft at 400mm (not that I could tell).

Blisteringly fast focus and 2.8 all the way (70-200) although this multiplies with the T/Cs.

100-400 was no slouch on the focussing front either. Sigma's that we looked at (see other threads) were nice, but bloody heavy and no IS..

I think the biggest issue with the 28-300 is it's weight. Although it covers a wide range, it's a bit on the big and heavy side to be used as a walkabout lens unless you have a very strong neck and arms!
