Hi,

I've had some problems recently where my Chim stalls at idle when warm.

Took a look at the dist cap and rotor arm and they were well worn.

Looking at previous threads, pattern parts are slated and genuine Lucas recommended.

I prefer to fit original parts but £30 (inc VAT+del) for a rotor arm is excessive.

Ended up fitting Intermotor pattern parts at a fraction of the cost and all is so far OK. Increased engine response and touch wood no stalling.

Here are some part no's that may be useful:

Dist Cap:
TVR: 035E782A
Lucas: RTC3197
Intermotor: INT 44790

Rotor Arm:
TVR: 035E588A
Lucas: STC1857
Intermotor: INT 47650

Will update this post if all goes t*ts up.

Kind Regards
Brian

They list them and show a pic of a green lucas box but don't have any original ones for sale when you ring up and ask. There is another point to remember, the later lucas stuff available (post mid to late 90's) is generally re badged imported parts, the rotor arms are identical to the current CI ignition (made in italy?)part, except they have lucas printed in paint and come in green box. The CI part sells for less than £5.The same probably applies to the caps. If they have not got the lucas england lettering cast into them they are not original lucas type that appear to last longer without giving rise to running issues.

About to buy new Dist cap and rotor arm, but I want correct and good parts oviously.

Racing Green list 035E782A as the dist cap, thats OK, but list 035E783A as the rotor arm which is different to what 'Marlboro' states a couple of posts back.

Any one any ideas what the differenc is ?

If you dont want to pay rip off prices for the lucas rotor arm,but want the best quality, then get the ones that are made on the original tooling with the same materials. They are out there, and are just the same quality as the original lucas branded item, they are no longer allowed to manufacture them with the Lucas writing moulded onto them, that and the price are the only difference!! As far as the dizzy cap goes there are lots of makes that will be just as good, and perform and last the same as the lucas onesmile

That's the right number. I bought one from the same place earlier this week, and it's fine (the car's still misfiring, but that's another story).

And how do you know Mike? We had a few Lucas boxed ones from the LSUK shop and they were all crap. Now got original Lucas embossed one in and all is well again. Not worth the hassle for the extra £15, I know they're expensive but do the job without the hassle.

I'm not referring to the Lucas boxed ones being any good.Unfortunately LSUK can put anything in a Lucas box, nowadays. There are a few differnt types available, and the one i'm referring to is the same as the original Lucas in construction, materials etc,and is made on the original tooling, but does not have Lucas written on it any more as the people that make them have to remove the writing for legal reasons, since Lucas doesn't exist any more!.I'll try and get some pictures to clarify.

What constitutes pukka Lucas?
The LSUK ones are Lucas boxed but that doesn't seem to mean ought as they were as crap as the Intermotor ones.
I got ours from RPI and were approx £22 delivered (rotor arm).

I was in my local Lucas service centre last week to get my alternator repaired. I confidently said to the guy "its a Lucas alternator" to which he confidently said to me "I doubt it mate, Lucas hasn't made any parts for nearly a decade".
Apparently they sold off the Rights to use the green boxes to about 5 no. companies.

Exactly. The ones I got are obviously old stock but have the part number (something like 0544005544 stamped) plus "LUCAS - Made in England" also embossed.
Must be very old stock as buggerall made here now.

Hi there

Want to replace the complete ignition system. From FF website looks like the dizzy cap is FF000751 and the rotor arm is FF000752.
Would someone mind confirming this for me.('97 4.0 Chim)
Also want to replace the wires and extensions. What are the recommendations on this. Basic wires or super-duper wires. Are they worth the money?

Also don't see spark plug extensions on FF website, do I need to source them elsewhere?

Any help appreciated.

Rgds

You can get the plug extenders off Ebay under vauxhall spares, and stock leads will do the job just fine(Stock Lucas Land Rover methinks)i got solid extenders and super douper leads from Castle Race Engines, and they was both reasonably priced unlike some alternatives i can mention beginning with M but at the end of the day the RV8 as a primitive ignition system and all thats needed is to bring it up to scratch,in other words dont sp*nk to much money on it.
