I met up with a good friend of mine, who brought along a guy who had bought a new Gti in july.

He was really keen to see how his car stacked up against my R32. He was pretty confident he would be beat me.

I scoffed at the idea, and thought he was somewhat of a spanner.

We went to the nearby autobahn, luckily it wasnt busy, and we decided to run the cars from 80kmh in thrid. (imho giving the R32 even more of an advantage)

We went on the third honk, both cars went at the same time which was good. We also had two people in both cars. His was a manual, whilst mine is a DSG.

The Gti instantly lept ahead of me, and then steadily gained 2 car lengths till 170kmh, then it just creeped away, holding station some 20m ahead of me till an indicated 240kmh.

To say im somewhat miffed would be an understatement. My good friend is at this moment dynoing my car and this gti, and the gti put down 232PS and 330NM of torque. (this is on a MAHA dyno, the best in the world)

Ill update this thread when i find out what mine makes.

Interesting, but crazy.

best,
adam

From VWs website

GTI

Engine maximum Speed** 146mph - 235km/h
Engine acceleration 0-62mph 7.2secs
Maximum output PS 200 at RPM 5100
Maximum torque 207 lbs.ft / 280 Nm at RPM 1800

Weight = 1500kg

R32

Engine maximum Speed** 155mph - 250km/h
Engine acceleration 0-62mph 6.5secs
Maximum output PS 250 at RPM 6300
Maximum torque 236 lbs.ft / 320 Nm at RPM 2800

Weight = 1594kg

R32 should have the edge but GTI is rated at 200ps so your mates 236ps is well over and ditto the torque figure, is it an Edition 30? These are rated at 230ps.
I thought the R32 would be more than 94kg heavier, its engine must be heavier and its got 4WD.

Well the golf GTI must have been remap to beat the R32, and if it is a 30 edition GTI, stage one remap is producing 300Bhp and 180Mph, whith would wipe the floor with a standerd R32.

I followed this thread in the general gassing section. I know a lot of debate goes on about the GTi vs R32 stuff. The GTi is a lighter car and his was a very good example. However it is putting out far more than it should be so has had some fettling somewhere. You should see a + or - of 5% from the factory but never more.

As mentioned, it could be a standard edition 30 or its a fettled GTi.

lets be honest, the r32 is a much better car all round and he must just be tight with his money as anybody would buy the r32 over the gti. no matter how long a wait there is. thats just my opinion but lets face it..... IM RIGHT!!!

then there's the 4motion of the R32 meaning in the wet you will get better grip when racing your mate off the lights

Lol, the R32 isn't that much of a better car really. I have a GTi with leather and some toys. What does an R32 do that mine doesn't?

Its only advantage is that it is 4 wheel drive so in the wet has a bit more traction? Oh and a better engine note... Along with rediculous tax prices and a thirst for fuel!

On 6.5 days out of 7 that means nothing at all as I don't test the limit of my cars traction driving to work and back.

You could however say what does my GTi do that my mums Nissan Micra doesn't in that case.

Somouk, it depends on what sort of driving you do. I would take the R32 anyday of the week if all my driving was on twisty B roads.

How many miles has your R32 done? The B7 RS4 takes a good 15k to fully release the ponies (see http://www.rs246.com/index.php?name=PNphpBB2&f... )

Also, does your R32 have the latest software update?

It has 21,000 miles.

I dont know if it has the latest software....

VW have gotten back to me and they want the car back for some testing, so good news i guess. Should be sorted, im not taking it back till it has 250ps...should cause them so headaches i guess

Sounds odd.

I suppose the 4wd of the R32 won't help at a 50mph start, but the expected extra torque should do it.

Also, daft as it sounds - comparable fuel load? Could be as much as what, 50 litres difference if one was fuelled up and the other running on fumes? ~50kg?

Another vote that the GTi isn't exactly standard from me. Take pleasure from the fact that you'd still murder the gti from the lights, and round the twisties, and sound better generally wink

This was taken straight from VWs website, where did you get 1330kg from?

Parkers say 1347kg for 5 door DSG and 1328kg for 3 door manual which is 153 and 172kg difference respectively. You would think VW would state the lighter weights.

Oh dear. You'd be better of with a remapped BM 123d with those figures!
