Hi all. Posted couple of weeks ago bout rough running - have now replaced - leads for magnecor, full set new plugs, new coil packs, and a full system from ACT, think now the parts to replace, the lambdas, am I going in the right direction and if so can anyone let me know where to get quality replacements. Seen lots advertised that you have to splice into the original wiring but have been advised to avoid these? Thanks in advance for any input.

You are replacing lots but still getting the spluttering.

My advice is to step away from the wallet. smile

Have you done a diagnostic trace while the spluttering is happening?

No but it only seems to happen when you load the throttle at about 5000rpm then seems to pull through the sputtering and pulls as normal.

Well below 4000 and on part throttle the car is trying to obey the lambdas.

Below 4000 and on full throttle is isn't. So full throttle at below 4000 rpm and tell us if it splutters.

Above 4000 and on any throttle and the car is completely ignoring the lambdas. So no problem

Just tried your suggestion and yes, if you put your foot down quickly from tickover it does not gain revs cleanly at all, very hesitant. However if you drive the car around at normal speeds it seems to drive as before I had the problem! Heres a run down of the past few months: Had car serviced, new plugs, leads etc, ran like a dream, then started to have the spluttering issues, took to my dealer and he believed it was the cats, these were removed and found to have partially melted due to superheating, hence why I got the new ones from ACT. Problem improved about 75%. Mechanic friend of mine suggested that the coils might be playing up so these have been replaced, again a slight improvement, and now I am in my current position!

If normal speeds for you is 4000 and above then one would suspect the lambdas suffered from the same heating as the cats.

BUT, don't go out and buy new lambdas just yet. Do you have a means of recording the cars diagnostics while you are driving?

Nope, not saying that. Get the software and a laptop with an RS232 port. If you were in my neck of the woods I would do it for you. The diagnostic info will save you a fortune in 'replace and try costs'.

I guarantee that one of the owners local to you will have one and be prepared to use it on your car. Post the results for us all to have a look at. It will very likely tell you where the problem is. Or at the very least where it isn't.

Its free. Go to your local RO meet and someone will have it. Or look on bykers website. It, and a lot of other useful stuff is for download

Don't appologise for ignorance. The only appologies required in this world are for people who don't ask the questions. smile

Get the ones from the track car solutions website.

Knowing his reputation for CERB knowledge, I'm sure he would only supply parts that 'do the proper job'.

My 4.2 has started doing this again. It's been sitting face down on my drive, and I reckon water has been sitting in various bits.

It also did it last year, and that was solved with a new coil & leads. It also had the alternator reconditioned, as there wasn't enough voltage getting to the injectors "apparently".

This may mean something to someone on here smile

My car went through a similar list of parts trying to cure rough running and (amongst other things like cam timing) it turned out to be a corrupt ECU. Try a new ECU chip if you can.

Mines doing it too.
I've had new leads and coils. New fuel pressure valve thingy and a new ECU chip.
Next on my list is to replace the big fuse (with a midi one) and maybe the battery.
If that doesn't work, then I'm thinking my knocking Cats may have something to do with it - which would upset the Lambda sensors??
This sort of problem can add up to a large bill over time frown

My road (unless anything obvious pointed you elewhere eg throttle screw loose) would be...

Crap petrol - put in injector cleaner and fill up with TESCO super or v power.

Dry your wiring loom and all visible electrical parts with a hairdryer and try to avoid getting water anywhere near the engine bay in the future.

Battery 072 - can't go wrong even if it's not affecting it, as in my opinion we neglect this cheap part when it is really the life blood of the car.

Set the engine up from scratch using the laptop and the CERB MANUAL as a guide.

Air intake system - crudded up, loose pipes/junilee clips, clogged air filter etc.

Air leaks in the manifolds etc.

Lambdas - replace both.

Spark plugs - replace all with the right ones.

New magnecor competition ignition leads or equivalent (get the ones for the 4.2 and reroute them round the back of the engine).

Throttle pots - replace both, but some signs should be seen on the laptop that these are starting to give spurious readings.

Coil packs - replace both.

I've probably missed something but someone else will spot it.

If you've still got problems, then things get a little more tricky and let us know if you get to this point without any joy.
