My bloody door don't work!

The drivers side exterior door release does nothiing, no noise, no noticible click, no nothing!

Works fine from the inside so I assume it is either the release moter thingy in the lock (contacts I hope) or the button in the wing mirror itself.

Any other ideas?

I posted exactly the same thing a couple of weeks ago. Identical situation. Have/had booked it in for next week after getting sick of going round to the passenger side and pretending to do something else in petrol stations...oh...fancy that...the door just popped open (not being one to give pleasure to those hoping my TVR won't work). Three weeks ago I took off the mirror glass and all looked clean, took off the speaker grille, liberally applied WD40 everywhere but nothing. Then this morning, driving through London with the roof down and decide to push the mirror back a little. As I do so I catch the button and the bloody door pops open.....rolleyes TVRs, you have to love them.....

I was feeling proud of myself for installing a new mirror, but forgot to route the wires correctly (there's some rubber matting in the door to keep it away from the window mechanism). The next time I wound down the window it promptly cut the wires!

alol.

Had a look at mine but none of the obvious things - next plan is to run a current across the soliniod thing (I know it isn't one), if that works then I am in the mirror - wow is me.

PS had a great drive today.

Just a thought, doesn't the knob inside the car operate by pulling wire cables which releases the door locks?

So if the button on the mirror doesn't work/make any noise it may be a faulty door solenoid

Have checked mine & have found that as I suspected the doors are opened from inside via mechanical wire system
In other words not via the door solenoid

From the outside the mirror button operates the door solenoid
So most likely your door solenoid is faulty

If so, nice cheap fix...

What about the button in the mirror its self? (admittedly the solenoid (which apparently it isn't by the way) is easier to get to)

Solenoids are prone to packing up & can appear to be ok when testing, because sometimes they will still work with no load on them, in otherwords without the door release attached & voltage applied across the contacts
But usually they just won't work......

How do you know its not the solenoid, do the doors operate with the remote?

Have you tried spraying contact cleaner on the mirror switch (from inside the mirror)
Probably best to get mirror glass out to get better access, don't know how difficult this is to do
Not very difficult with my car as its prone to falling out by itself (-:

Also have you checked theres no damaged/broken wires where they pass through the bottom of the door into the body of the car?
Rubber grommets all in place?

Just looked in the TVR Bible (Have you got one)?

It says that the door mechanism will not operate if the door courtesy switch is not fully depressed (by bottom of door sill)
The switch is prone to sticking, therefore lock won't operate
There is an access hole behind it so it can be replaced if necessary

Also there should be a rubber pad on the door which when you close the door fully depresses the courtesy switch
This pad can fall off & again lock won't operate
Repair by glueing on new pad

Hope this helps....

FWIW the opening mechanism DOES operate with the door open, but the central locking does not - is this what the bible means?

Think i've also confused the issue by talking about Solenoids

What I actually meant was the electric door release solenoid
Not the central locking solenoid...

If you look under the carpet behind the door, you'll see there are two solenoids each side of the car, one for the central locking & one for the door release button on the mirror

With the door open, can you hear your door release trying to operate(clicking) by pressing the mirror button even on the side of the car that won't operate when the door is closed?

I have this problem right now on my Chim. The driver side door release "doesn't work" consistently.

For me, I believe that my door button is OK as I can hear a relay click when I press, but the solenoid doesn't always move. It makes no difference if the door is open or closed - the door-opening-solenoid should always operate.

Looks like I need to check my wiring + solenoid tonight.

If you can get to the contacts on the back of the door button (I assume by removing the mirror glass, etc)
Then you can test the Solenoid without removing it, by pulling the wires off the back of the door button & touching them together

This should operate the solenoid, if it seems to do so reliably (i'd try it a good few times) then its probably a dodgy door button (try contact cleaner on the button before buying new)
If it doesn't work, then good chance its the solenoid thats faulty

On the other hand, it might be easier to get the solenoid out of the car 1st & test, than getting the mirror button out 1st
Can't comment on ease of removal as personally i've never removed either on a Chim

Sorry couldn't be more help on that, might be worth asking for advice on here to see which is easier to remove 1st
It would be very annoying if you got the solenoid out & it was a right b*stard job to get in/out & then discovered it was a faulty button
Or visa versa

Personally I'd try easy fixes 1st, check wires are all ok through door hole, etc , spray a load of contact cleaner under the mirror glass so hopefully it seeps down to contacts on the back of the mirror button
