Touareg 3.0 Diesel Fuel economy ??? Other Touareg questions

Been thinking of buying one of these (used) for my old man.
Am I right in assuming that the 3.0 V6 is better then the 2.5 (V5??) engine??
What sort of economy do these get in everday use?? He will be concerned about that - his current Volvo S60 T5 Auto is only geting around 20mpg and the rationale for a replacment is to get better economy!
I assume the Auto box on these is a conventional type with a torque converter??...and NOT the DSG type? Also - does it have air suspension as standard - my wife had a Cayenne with the Sports style suspenion - steel sprung on 20" rims - and it was a complete pig to drive - God I hated that car - so just want to make sure th Touareg does not drive the same??
Anything to watch out for on circa 2 year old Touaregs???
Second choice is the A6 3.0Tdi V6 Auto - which I know will get better economy than the Toureg - but which bizarrley looks like it will be more money to buy?
