Fuel Pump & Loom Upgrade

Good evening folks, i will be taking delivery of a M400 in a week or so's time, however I'm unsure as to wether the fuel pump & loom have been changed. I know the previous owner was into track days so the chances are he did uprate the loom. I'm pretty sure the pump hasn't been changed out as they make a whining noise don't they?

So my questions are>

How will I be able to tell an uprated loom & pump over standard?

If it hasn't been done how easy is it DIY? I'm not confident at all when it comes to electrics, soldering etc. Are there any threads or pics detailing this? I had a good search and couldn't find anything.

AKAIK - Unless you are having a power upgrade the standard M400 pump should be okay. I am not confident at electrics either - If I were you, I would take it to someone who is familiar with Nobles to check the loom, then have an upgraded one fitted (not a big job) if you only have the original.

Looking if the wiring has been upgraded is pretty easy. (Remove passenger side rear wheel, remove the panel that is in front of the wheel by removing about 12 screws. If the wires running to the fuel pump are tiny then they have not been upgraded. Don't know about the pump other than the natural upgrade the motorsports pump is supposed to be very noisy.

FYI, another key part of the wiring upgrade is the addition of a power relay, which should also be easy to spot if the panel covering the pump/filter compartment is removed.

So if it hasn't been done, how easy is it to fit yourself? Is there soldering, splicing involved? Is it just a case of replacing whats there for new?

Iain, it is a very simple job. relay(use the skinny old wires for the switch on the relay) new fused live feed direct from either the starter motor or battery(using a 20ampish cable) and a earth direct to spaceframe using same gauge wire as the new positive feed. Job done.

hmm even that to me sounds complicated Will maybe make more sense once I see whats to be done.

It's not too bad a DIY job, but if you're not comfortable working around the battery and running wires between the battery and fuel pump you might want to have someone else do the job, if it's needed.
