Im looking within the next 6 months to get myself a Cobra Replica. I've just now starting to look and would appreciate any comments of essential must haves and have not. What engines, who builds the best replica. How good are Soverign as they seem to have most of the UK cars for sale. Budget £30k

Thanks

Are you looking to build yourself, or buy a turnkey car?

For buying ready-builty cars, Sovereign are specialists in this field, and £30k would buy you a very nice car from them.

There are build specialists around (shout DAVE!!!) who will build a brand new car to your requirements. Be prepared for a long waiting list though.

As for "Which Cobra is the best?" - Ask ten different people, and expect ten different answers!

Seconded; having a car built to your own personal spec by DB Replicas means;
1)You end up with exactly the spec you really want.
2)Built by the ackowledged expert with over 100 builds to date.
3)Dave keeps you updated all the time, if your local you can call in whenever.
4)It's guaranteed, and Dave is as good as his word on this.
5)High resale value.

I opted to do this, have owned the car for ten months now, never regretted it, best car ever, and as my profile shows, I've owned a few over the years.

Engine? A FORD of course; that's what the real ones used..! The noise is WILD, handsome looking unit whether you go for small block (lighter, more room to work round, five litre up to seven litre capacity.)
Or, big block seven litre (really fills the underbonnet, not cheap nowadays, but..wow!)

Depends what you mean by best - it's open to interpretation (bit like cobras!)

If you want modern interpretation of a cobra then AK, Dax or GD. The GD is ahead of AK and Dax in terms of quality - their GRP finish is stunning (some of the flash lines on Daxes need a sherpa to guide you to the top lol!) and their chassis is the stiffest and best performing of the three. I've seen a Dax jacked on one corner and all 3 remaining wheels stay on the ground!

If you're looking for accuracy then it's a different ball game - you need to eitehr talk to Hawk cars, the Kirkham is the pinnacle - or Crendon which is also slavish to the original. it may even be possible to make a Kirkham hybrid as I believe Hawk are selling the Kirkham aluminium bodies for £10K, mate it to a Crendon chassis for a very acurate replica on reasonable budget. You're already saving on paint as you'll want to show of that lovely raw alloy body!

Finally the GD MK4 is probably the best compromise between original body shape (splashed straight off a MkIV AC) and performance.

Look at some pics of original csx cobras, look at some DAXes etc. - if you like the modern look stainless, chrome and 17's then it's DAX, AK or GD, but if you like the FAT 15"s, stubby black side pipes, raydyots and quick lifts then talk to HAwk or Crendon.

You can make AK's, Daxes look more authentic but the body shape is in reality a mile away from the real thing so best choose correctly to start with wink

THAT'S CALLED SUSPENSION MATEY, IT'S SUPPOSED TO DO THAT.

FROM WHAT I CAN TELL THE CRENDON HAS 2 4" ROUND TUBES AND THEN IT ALL GOES PETE TONG, WITH JAG SUSPENSION PICK UP POINTS ETC.
BTW. YOU CAN GO DIRECT TO KIRKHAM FOR A KIRKHAM, AND PROBABLY BUILD THE WHOLE THING FOR LESS THAN A HYBRID.

IT IS POSSIBLE TO FIT 15" WHEELS AND BLACK PIPES ON ALL COBRA KITS.

Easy Tiger! Just MHO!

"THAT'S CALLED SUSPENSION MATEY, IT'S SUPPOSED TO DO THAT."

It's supposed to do that to a pointwink (it was well past that - I guess the door jamming was a clue)

"FROM WHAT I CAN TELL THE CRENDON HAS 2 4" ROUND TUBES AND THEN IT ALL GOES PETE TONG, WITH JAG SUSPENSION PICK UP POINTS ETC"

Now that'd be an interesting conversation starter with John Kerr!

"BTW. YOU CAN GO DIRECT TO KIRKHAM FOR A KIRKHAM, AND PROBABLY BUILD THE WHOLE THING FOR LESS THAN A HYBRID."

Agreed but Mr Hawk gets very, VERY arsey about such matters - one of our local members tried to make enquiries down this route and got his ear chewed off when Hawk found out via Kirkham! A liberty? probably but as sole UK distributer I think he's quite protective smile

"IT IS POSSIBLE TO FIT 15" WHEELS AND BLACK PIPES ON ALL COBRA KITS."

Yup and some look really nice but 15 wheels and black pipes don't make an authentic cobra as you know - it was just an example of some of the things - my point was if he really liked the oem look then maybe he'd be better off starting with a more acurate shell. My own AK had the tapered stripes, roundels, raydots, white pipes, quick lifts, L542s, internal boot hinges (the bane of most cob reps for me *churrr*) etc. but the car never really looked quite right because of the shell shape.

"THE CAPITALS IS NOT SHOUTING, JUST SHOWING WHAT'S MY WRITING ;O)"

;O) Shout if you like! Was just trying to point out he needed to consider what he wanted from the car really and give some food for thought on options cos up til now it was reading a bit like a Dax advert, lol tongue out !

If I had that kind of money I'd go for a Kirkham but equally I can name several people in our region who'd go straight for a Dax (and one or two who'd suffer the bricks and missiles and go for GD!) so you pays your money...

Congrats mate; you won't regret it, and actually the months will pass quickly, its actually a really exciting time going over all the details in your mind, jotting things down etc.. but not quite as exciting as when the car arrives, as mine did last Xmas Eve.. and your handed the keys..!
My missus was snapping with the camera, there are some VERY amusing shots of me looking a bit nervy as Dave's delivery man explains what will happen when I engage first..and asks if I've ever driven one..!
Keep us posted!

Yes Congrats - the cobra experience is like no other, you'll love it!
Looking at the cars in your profile, I hope you've spec'd a 383 or more as you'd be disappointed with a stock Chevy 350 wink
