50mph is the Limit

[poll]24|150|160[/poll]

It's been widely reported in the media this week that the Department of Transport, Local Government and the Regions (DTLR) is considering the imposition of 50mph speed limits on some of the country's motorways. They believe that this will improve traffic flow.

The M25 is held up as an example of lower speed limits improving flow. As a sop to critics the possibility of raising limits elsewhere was also raised although hardly likely to be implemented in the current anti-speed climate.

ehhh? is this the result of the opinion poll?

Only a fcuk-wit would support the 50 limit. Hands up, fcuk-wits, and get real. If you want this, what the hell are you doing with a sports car? do everyone a favour and commit suicide. Get the hell off my road, you're no use to anyone, and taking up too much room. Go get a beige metro and have done with it.

Apologies to everyone else for my tone and sentiments, but honestly.

Dunno where that result came from, but on the radio yesterday they reckon 6% of Fatal RTAs occur on motorways, which obviously conclusively supports that government policy, that Speed Kills..

Would one (or more) of the 39 voters who believe that a 50mph limit could ease traffic congestion PLEASE EXPLAIN THEIR REASONING ?

50mph = 80kmh which is a bit to sloooww, in Holland the b**tch of a minister (who is the great "rule creator" of traffic here) is also thinking of a 80 kmh limit on the roads.

If this becomes the speedlimit i think scooters should be allowed too on the highway (so i can take the fastes way to work, which means no travelling with rains anymore!)

it has occured to me that maybe some of 'em pressed it by accident, and some of them may be Net Tourists, and don't count...

If the limit comes down to 50, I am really going to purchase that bloody great big V8 engined car (that I've been promising myself for years) and enjoy the ride and save petrol. If you can't go fast, you may as well cruise in style.

But for those who truly believe that 50mph solves everything, please get your head examined. What will this do for commute times? if you could guarantee 50mh would be the MINIMUM speed, then maybe it would be ok.

I spend quite a lot of time on the M25 in Surrey. The variable speed limit system might be a good idea in the rush hour only they can't get the link between traffic volume and speed limit. It really cheers you up when you're sat in a queue and the limit goes back from 40 to 60.

The main problem on this motorway is that zillions of pounds were spent building a fourth lane SO HOW COME NO FCUKER USES IT? The "dawdle along in my Volvo estate waiting for the merciful release of death" brigade have migrated from lane 2 to lane 3 and assume that lane 1 is either for milk floats or for people leaving at the next junction even if it isn't for ten sodding miles. Oh my God - I might have to CHANGE LANES !!

Net result - two lanes solid, inside lane empty. As Clarkson once commented - you'd think they'd put bloody mines in it.

Try it - drive from jn 10 to jn 9 anticlockwise in moderate to heavy traffic. You can maintain a pretty steady ton in lane 1 if you don't mind undertaking (I would never condone that, it's illegal and very dangerous - after all that flat hat in the Allegro might decide to try the view from lane 1 for the first time since he took his test in 650BC, and breaking the speed limit is a stupid and dangerous thing that no sane human being would ever attempt)

on an open road 50 mph will send me to sleep, cars are far too quiet and comfortable these days, sit back in the seat whack the heater up and zzzzzzzz , i drive a bit quicker say 70-75 in a 60 (depending on road conditions) i feel a lot more alert and aware of whats going on around me ,if you dawdle your not concentrating and your mind wanders , and whay do we really need speed cameras just deploy OAP's rename them "mobile hinderance units" and send them off down the shops bingo ! roads block with incompetent drivers and no more speeding ...

[oops - bit quick off the mark there...]

Too bloody right Steve.

And the sad thing is that at most junctions, Lane 1 ISNT just to turn off. You can sit in Lane 1 nearly the whole way round, just moving over to 2 for certain junctions (relieves the monotony).

And as lane 2 is generally pretty vacant, you can quite safely undertake in Lane 1 as you describe, with a clear lane between you and all the zombies. Much better progress, some days!

I say Old Boy, steady on there. Colonel Frogmorton Trumpington-Rsole-Rsole-Knobfondler of the First Battalion, The Queen's Own Sunday Drivers here. The human body wasn't designed for speeds of over fifty miles per hour don't you know.

I'll have you know I've been driving for over seven hundred years, never had an accident, never been faster than forty-five, always got there safe and sound. Why do you Johnny Racer types need these awful, noisy sports car thingies? Are you Communists or something? What's wrong with my trusty old Marina? Why, if you want something a bit more "sporty" they do a Coupe don't you know. Bit flash for me but just the ticket for you young lads - have a bit of fun and all that.

And what's all this tosh about not being able to have fun on the busy roads these days. Mrs. Trumpington-Rsole-Rsole-Knobfondler and I went for a splendid drive last Sunday. Didn't get stuck behind traffic once.

Sorry, have to go. Time for my caravan club meeting.

'cos I am still out of work, when I drove down to Lakeside yesterday (trying to be economical) - it was really annoying that the ONE speed you can't do is 70 !

You get pushed up to 75-80, or down to 55, so speed limits all seem a bit irrelevant when you're not in a built up area.

Amazingly I completed the journey without feeling stressed out - god, am I getting old or what???!!!

Point is, everyone seemed quite happy in the 55-85 range, so why the hell don't we raise the limit, or leave it alone?!
